Google Earth will now be able to alert users about areas that are considered to be a lightning hazard using data provided by a website called GuiWeather.com.
According to GE blogger Frank Taylor the data is near-real time and the animation shows the last 30 minutes of lightning strikes worldwide.
In Africa, when I did my search, I received the follow image (http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=754&nocache=1), the little yellow specks on the map are lightning warnings.
I picked up lightning in the Northern region of the DRC and they last occurred at 09:00:07 UTC on the 18th of June 2007. Impressive information IMO, now if only Africa could up their Internet penetration rates perhaps this service could be of some use .
BTW … GuiWeather plan to add information about earthquakes, fires and reconnaissance flights in future which I for one would find quite interesting.
