Sooo..
My router got fried last night, and I am getting a new one today but I need to put in some sort of lightning protection that is going to work.

Can anyone recommend anything? (apart from the obvious "unplug the router if there is a storm". ;) )

get decent lightning protection plug, both on the power side, and the telephone socket. And make sure they're both earthed, otherwise it won't help much. Clearline's products work very well, and the Teljoy ones offer warranty for the damaged goods if it still get's hit by lightning.

yeah, look for something with good specs, and make sure your earthing is good at the plugpoint you use

Any advice on how to make sure your earthing is good? How do you do this, other than digging a hole and burying a 5 metre copper bar?

answered your own question :P all houses need to be earthed, so chances are your wall sockets are already grounded well enough I guess. doing the copper bar thing however and having a short, straight, thick copper wire from that to your devices will obviously help a lot though

More seriously :D ... between the extremes of doing my own installation, and just assuming house circuit ground is ok, is there any testing equipment you can get?

Where you from?
You the 8th person I know complaining about lightning hitting them.

It's the only answer that works.:o

The circuitry that interprets adsl signal is very sensitive (has to be). 90% of the time routers get fried via the phone line not the power line (thumb-sucked stat).

Most of the UPS designs have a port for phone lines, but it won't make a difference. Its just a fuse.

By the time the fuse/trip switch kicks in the router has already been dead for ages.

Aside from unplugging your best bet is probably to buy a set of separate units instead of an integrated home router. i.e. separate wireless AP, switch and modem. That way it costs less when the inevitable happens.:o

Replaced my router about 2 weeks ago. It had name brand protection on both phone line and power line. At least it lasted 2 years.:D

Probably GP. Lighting storms every bloody day atm.

@SecretCode: I don't think theres is a test. Most household electricians will measure the tripping point of the earth leakage if asked. Which is complete bull**** since the earth leakage unit isn't even connected to earth (It compares live & neutral. If there is a difference then it leaked somewhere). I think its mostly a case of going for an overkill on the grounding & ensuring that its good that way.

Clearline's products work very well, and the Teljoy ones offer warranty for the damaged goods if it still get's hit by lightning.
Has anyone here ever claimed on that? Or even heard of someone who has been successful? I've only heard of cases of people who tried to claim & failed. Fine print and burden of proof BS.

tell me about it -.-

been storming every bloody night since the weekend.

what you have to keep in mind though is how stable wireless is going to be in that weather :/

Lonehill, been an absolute nightmare every night this week.
The strike that got me, was far away so it must have nuked about 40 houses on the way over :D
