Ok.. We don't normally get lightning down here at the coast, but just now my Telkom ADSL line go wacked !!..

The whole house was lit up !! Looked like a premature xmas party.

Anyhow, my modem seemed to have survived, but I now have the problem is that the 'lightning' power is stuck inside my modem.. and it wants to download at an absurd rate of 8000 mbps... Windows tells me that my hard drive is too slow !!

Anyone got a suggestion as to what I should do or any known hack ?

travel back to the future with marty mcfly and doc and try save your house from the dreaded lightning bolt ! basically .... unplug everything from ram chips to hdds and gfx cards and dvd roms , even the modem , try get some anti static materials or bags and hope for the best ....

always ... and i mean ALWAYS unplug your pc mains + lan cable + modem from the telkom line , if you can tell the lightning and thunder are pretty close to your house , i mean seriously dont ever take a chance like that ! some other peeps on mybb might have better advice tho.

good luck dude

We dont have anything faster than 4mb in EL due to lack of metro backbone.
There has been quite a bit of lightning lately though. Where are you in EL?

getting worse now.. seems even my internet alarm clock changed to 'Radio
Sonder Grenser' :D

unplug everything for a while = remove plugs from mains & phone socket.

Leave out for at least 30min.

Then plug in & see what it does.

If you think the surge current still running in the mains then trip the earthleakage. Leave 5min & put on again.

Woah! How cool lightning has sped up your modem! :D
Solution.. buy a fast hdd :D

Looks like you found a way to speed up your connection. Now just wait for the next lightning strike and line up your download hahaha

Get a corporate drobo-type solution and set like a whole load of them up in raid...might be able to cope with the speed;-)

Hehe! Okay, serious now. Do you have your adsl username and password? Reset the modem (usually that is done by pushing on a little sunken button with a paper clip for 10 seconds or so on the router) Look at the router manual for where and how, then reconfigure it. If that does not work, see if you can flash it with the latest firmware.

That wasn't lightning... you've been hit by the "Jack Parow" virus!!! Power down and only use Linux from now on.
