Hi guys,
Wonder if any of you have experience with this;
We're currently renovating our new place, should be moving in the next 2 weeks and the only FTTH around my area (Linksfield) is through Lightspeed. Now they offer great speeds but their cap is an issue.
I spoke to them and asked if it's possible to get them to bring it into my house, sign a month to month contract and then move to another ISP which offers a cap package suited for me, they said that's fine.
Does any one have any experience with this? Are there any hidden costs involved?
What I understand from this is that I will pay Lightspeed to trench the fibre and then once I move ISP's I owe nothing to Lightspeed? Would that be correct?
Moving into a complex with over 100 stands and Lightspeed say they just need 17 sign-ups to begin brining fibre into the complex, which is really not high as i've already spoken to neighbours who are on board.
It's a pitty that they don't offer lower speed packages with higher data.
Thanks in advance.

if you are an owner in the new place you could buy bulk and distribute to everyone, thats what I did in my building and we each pay R400pm uncapped for access to a 100mbps line, something to consider if you are an owner, if a tenant just go with this.

I doubt you will have to pay significant transfer costs because the fibre probably doesn't belong to cybersmart. from our side if we change ISPs the only cost incurred is the installation of the new ISP's equipment at the final point.

It will depend on other ISPs signing some sort of deal with Lightspeed. You will pay the ISP, and they will pay Lightspeed .....

Lightspeed will just not be the one providing you with ISP services....

Thanks for this.
We are the owners, can you elaborate on buying bulking and distributing? Who is your ISP?
Sounds like an awesome package you've got, R400pm for uncapped 100mpbs is the best deal i've seen in long.
Do you get full speeds?

yes I get full speeds, I have given a broad outline of the model in this section a few times

we installed a LAN in our building and basically just bought bulk from Cybersmart and distributed the internet ourselves.

You can purchase a 100mbps product for R12000pm lets say, sell to your end users at R400, and if you get to 50 users you are making R8000 surplus.

If you have no existing LAN, some financial engineering is required but as you can see from the surplus at 50 users that the model is basically self funding.

Internet is not the same as the actual line connecting you to it.

So you will have to pay a monthly rental fee for the fibre they installed for you, and your ISP that provides the internet.

You can't get lightspeed to install fibre and then just not pay them and expect your ISP of choice to provide you internet without some kind of physical line connecting you to the outside world?

I've done this with Cybersmart (Lightspeed) before, they just don't openly advertise it but other ISPs should be aware of it. There is slightly different pricing based on their model which has a higher barrier to entry but allows for much higher speeds.

For the performance on this service the cap is a non issue for me plus the bandwidth for that speed isn't expensive in SA terms.
I pay R999 for 500g day/1000g night and R300 for 100g over plus that 100g never expires with zero hidden cost - it's pretty hard to find a better solution in my mind unless you require more than 1tb a month in that case yeah you need uncapped. 23MB/sec from US servers, 17MB from Steam can stream 8k from Youtube and upload is super fast to with great latency if not the best... 137ms to EU.

Thanks for all the comments guys, much appreciated.
I'm going to approach our body corporate as I think the 100mbps uncapped is a great idea for such a low price. I currently don't have the time/knowledge to perform such a thing but I think if each house pays the BC and the BC use a company to install the LAN and use the excess cash on maintenance etc. it will benefit everyone. Hopefully that works out otherwise i'm still happy with individual accounts.

400-500GB pm is ideal for me. Currently lightspeed have a package for R899 and includes 200GB daytime and 1000GB 12am-7am.
The next package is R1500 pm for 500GB daytime and the same night time as previously stated.
Your package is R500 cheaper in terms of data, which I would be interested in. Who is your ISP?
I'm exploring all options available, i'm on a 20mbps VDSL line and moving to I hope a stable 10mbps line but I don't think i'll get the full speed.

.

our first contract is coming to end with Cybersmart at the end of this year afterwhich we will be upgrading to their 200mbps packages, end users will still pay R400pm

the model really works, it requires co-operation but Body Corporates are effectively co-operates, since everyone has to co-operate to the benefit of everyone

Lightspeed - but it was a pre-order special. Made it alot easier to acquire the interest.

Where in the EU. Mind posting a speedtest

In game Heroes of the Storm or Overwatch - so B.Net

I must say Speedtests don't always give me great results but here they are anyways... ICMP or SSH I get better speed/response.

Note this is at work and not at home so its on uncapped 50Mbps and not 200Mbps FTTH but it will be more or less the same latency as the routing is the same.

Yeah London, was wondering how you were supposed to beat the international cables to Germany, am used to people saying latency to e.g. LoL EUN. I have about 168ms on ADSL over my crappy WiFi. (Someone's on the net, so not best latency there either, should be getting ~160ms 8.4Mbps/0.84Mbps)

Its not beating the submarine cable if that's what you meant and... Germany??? WACS lands in Portugal and the UK - the old Sat3 was a 120ms round trip hop from CPT (Melkbos) to Portugal via ICMP which is more accurate than a speedtest. I have used many connections in my life and have never experienced sub 150ms from Cape Town to EU except for this link and its stable as hell very little jitter. 168ms is a pretty standard latency to EU - nothing special but late 130 or early 140 is very good for CPT - you are more than welcome to show me a better latency test to those locations - I will be interested to see, not kidding. Note my link is also in use business link in the middle of the day.

No, that's why I was wondering. My 168ms is actually pretty good for ADSL, which is pretty sad. I think anyone not on the Telkom IPC model has around 145-150ms from CT to London. My friend on Telkom Fiber has about 160ms.

The theoretical "best" would be 124ms on WACS. That excludes backhaul at both ends, routers and servers and a host of other things

Hence the results posted here are very ,very good.
