Limit home network access with devices that are private wifi address/mac randomization capable

Hi guys n girls

My apologies if this is covered in another thread, but my search couldn't find any.

I'm trying to manage my home network by using MAC address filtering so that i can turn device access on and off depending on behaviour in the house. However, I've discovered that my router can't recognize that same device if it has MAC randomization turned on.

Is there another way i can control these devices access? I'm using a Xiaomi AX1800 router and the problem devices are Huawei p40 phones.

Would really appreciate the collective brain's help.

I had the same issue but with iOS devices - eventually gave up
 
Turn off random mac on the devices

If they turn it back on again, have a rule that any unlisted MAC gets blocked if your router can
 
So you have a bandwidth hogger at home? Or many.
Just throttle the pooh on the entire router

Then install a 2nd router and give it full blown bandwidth, rename the SSID to something boring like HP_Printer and hide the SSID and use that one for all your cool stuff, let the wife and kids and in laws suffer on the slow one :thumbsup:
 
I do not know the AX1800, but the spec sheet states "wireless access control (blacklist and whitelist) ". So how does it achieve this with MAC randomisation? What does the manual say?

If all else fails, then setup either a proxy with authentication, or 802.1x, WPA2 or WPA3-enterprise instead of WPA2 personal.

The guest network may also provide some interesting control options.

Thanks for the suggestion: Will check my router if it has any options for unlisted/guest devices.

Super suggestion: will let wifey in on the secret if i get this right. she makes my food, so no use pissing her off too. Just the little cheeky monkeys that need to suffer ;)

Nothing in the manual about MAC randomization that's why i came to you smarty pants'.
Will also give these options a try to see which works best in the house. Thanks Champ!
 
Not sure if it will work, but I filter on MAC address and to connect to the wifi for that connection the randomization needs to be switched off, else there is no access. (using Mikrotik hAP, but used to filter on only certain MAC addresses allowed on other routers too).
