Hi All,

I am having problems with my internet connectivity. I am having problems with the surfing of web pages, sometimes I can connect to certain sites and at times I cannot.
I am also having problems updating my antivirus, namely AVG free edition. When I try and update, it connects and tells me the latest updates but when I try and download the update it comes up with an error saying.

"An error occurred when trying to connect to the server: The server name cannot be converted to the IP address"

Is anyone else having the same problems or do you guys think the problem is on my side, and if so do you have any ideas as to what the problem could be.

I am running Firefox on Windows XP through a Linksys WAG 354 Router.

Check that the file "hosts." only contain the entry "127.0.0.1 localhost". Some malware blocks you from accessing anti-virus vendor sites.

Check that you are using the correct DNS servers on your router and computer.

Try resetting your Internet explorer security to its default settings.

Tools --> Internet Options--> Security

I know someone who set their Internet explorer to a higher security who couldn't even access www.google.com or normal websites like absa or FNB

Hi I have checked the host file and it is exactly like you said it should be.

I have checked the internet security levels and they do not seem to help, as well as checking all the settings on my router and they all seem fine.

I tried opening www.paintball.co.za and it is not working but is I ping it from the command line I receive all the packets.

PS I tried IE and firefox and both are giving the same problems.

Check that you are not capped. ISP's can limit your access to a predefined access list. In our case you are put into a group with only the limited access once you reach youre cap.

If you are not capped, check if you get youre IP via DHCP, if you do, hardcode it and test again.

I also have issues, I use Imagine, am thinking I should go to Openweb instead, I can't access ssh or svn servers, unless I switch to another account at another ISP. slashdot.org en.wikipedia.org does not open among others.

can anyone tell me how I can find out if I have been capped? I have just reached my limit today and my internet is even worse, so I guess I have been capped now 3.01Gb
