Limiting amount of data used when Wifi tethering

I usually tether from my laptop to my phone to use the internet for personal stuff at work.

Is there any way to prevent the laptop from downloading updates, or anything in the background while I'm tethering?

Personal stuff at work? For shame!

Updates should never be automatic. At least mine are not. Even windows. Can get into kark with automatic updates.
