Hi all,

I would like to limit the amount of time "Bob" spends browsing per day/week/month. Basically introduce a capping system.

In other words, I want to limit Bob's browsing to 3hrs per day, is there any way this can be achieved? Once he reaches the 3hrs, the internet will stop working for him.

Ideas any one?

Thank you,

So, bob spends 3 hours a day browsing, and then he cannot browse anymore?

Sure : Purchase a cheap PC, install IPCop on it, and install the utility "Traffic Control And Report addon for IPCop" : http://www.onmind.ru/tcar/tcaren.htm

Every day you reset bob's limit to 3MB and IPcop will take care of him for you.

Need help getting this all running? PM me or do some research on IPcop itself.

Hi guys, I got kind of the same question here. I need to restrict access to the internet on certian computers on my network. But they must still be able to conect to the network and share work. So curently i have the router as the gateway to the internet and that is plugged into a 16 port switch.

How would i go about in restricting access to the net from the router. Btw it is a billion 5210s router as far as i know. Please could someone help me out here.

If you use a wireless router, many have this facility, as well as the ability to block dodgy sites. The terminology to search for is:
Sessions Limit
Bandwidth Limit
Parental Control

Google - I've seen some freeware tools for this before - Try searching for Internet Access Manager or the like

If you want to stop total web access from those machines, but still have network access, you could simply put a false proxy setting in the connection settings for IE / Firefox / whatever their web browser is.

It is not a fool proof method by any means, but if your users are not that clued up, it will stop them accessing the net.

Pro's: its simple and free
Con's: its simple and easy to get around if the users have a bit of knowledge.

This is what our IT people do, but as you say, if they know what they're doing, they can change it to the correct proxy. But, either way, the firewall blocks certain sites. There should be a firewall setting then that blocks ALL internet access.

We'll what you can do is to remove the default gateway from the network cards and then just take away admin rights from the users then they won't be able to change the network settings.

If your on a domain it will be even easier.

Give UNTANGLE a try its Open Source and Free with Commercial Add-ons should you need them.

Untangle runs as a bare-metal install, on Windows XP, VMware, Ubuntu & Debian.
