A would-be robber was killed and three others were wounded in a shoot-out with police in Mogwadi, Polokwane, on Friday, police said.
Police were tipped off that the four were planning to rob a cash-in-transit van en route to Mogwadi, Colonel Ronel Otto said.
"The four suspects, driving a sedan vehicle, blocked the [security] vehicle and forced it to a standstill," said Otto.
Police watching from a distance intervened as the men were about to open the cash van.
"The suspects started shooting at them. Police members retaliated and shot and [wounded] the four suspects," said Otto.
The four were taken to hospital where one later died. Police confiscated two 9mm firearms and two vehicles.
