Line Attenuation/Noise Margin

Still don't see any mention of 15, but he did give a update saying it changed to 11 from 9.

From the sticky: 11dB-20dB is good with little or no sync problems.

Nee thats not right...your router can do 4 / 10.

He probably meant 40...for that you need a different router. Not sure what he meant w/ filters though...
When I asked for 4mb, he said that my router was ancient and would never handle 4mb and he was surprised it was working on 2mb, I had to argue to get him to change it... He was very friendly though.

Yeah now it's on 12 for some reason; seems okay.

Those aren't the best routers in the world but it's still rated for a theoretical sync of 24Mbps. The nice thing about having your line sync faster than your account is it eliminates all overhead, for example if your line syncs at 4096kbps with a 4096kbps account you should see speeds of around 420kBps but without the overhead you would get 512kBps.

Which ADSL modems are rated best?

I had everything from Telkom standard, Netgear, D-Link and Billion. My D-Link still seem to work the best under bad line conditions. I am on the edge our exchange range (Florida, Roodepoort) and it's just possible to get 4Mbps with the D-Link ADSL modem, all other modems seem to be better of at 3Mbps.

Any modem that uses a Broadcom chipset, stay away from Trendchip, which D-Link do you have?

I wouldn't have the first idea how to do that, can you explain?

Sorry for the late reply, this update of the app doesn't notify me of any replys like the old one

Basically your line has alot of noise, it can be caused by electrical interference, water on the line, your copper pair crossed with another, and faulty pots filters, if you have a telephone plug one in and listen for crackling, if you don't have one borrow one, if you can't fix it yourself report it to whoever manages your line, you'll find download speeds are erratic in some cases and they may worsen when it gets stormy, with such low attenuation your SNR should be at about 20db, my attenuation is 25 and at 4096 my snr is at 17, and I consider my line to have a lot of noise compared to others I've seen

Basically the higher the SNR margin (noise) the more stable your connection will be :)

Could it be my old router causing it? I will plug the telephone in.

The telephone cable running to the wall runs parallel with the power cable of the router, could this also be causing noise?

I've never trusted any telkom routers, even the netgear ones, if you have a spare lying around I'd give it a try. The long telephone cable running next to the power cable can cause more noise, but from what I've experienced it's negligible if it's just from one side of a room to another. If you do but a new router I'd suggest a billion, very reliable and can do many things!
