hi,
I recently got hold of a wifi marconi adsl modem and when trying to 'dial up' I get an error 676 "line is busy". how I get an error like that on an ADSL line, who knows.
what I've done so far:
when trying to connect from two computers, via ethernet and wifi, I get this error 676. when I connect from my own pc, it works first time.
when I run the modem in 'router mode', where the modem handles the connection, it works 100%, which with the fact my pc connects fine via PPPoE dialup in XP, should rule out the modem being faulty.
the line is 100% because it's the same line my marconi single port ethernet runs on w/o any issues, and that I could connect from my pc and when the modem handles the connection.
after a lot of thinking, the only thing that differs between my pc and these other two, is that they both used to use a USB modem to connect to the internet. so this is what I've been thinking: to dial up via PPPoE, your network device sends sort of broadcast data out, and waits to see if any PPPoE enabled devices respond. once it is aware of such a device, it tries to initiate a connection through the device. the problem that is occuring I think, is that when the USB modem was installed, it installs a sort of virtual network device so that when your pc sends out that broadcast, this virtual device catches it, and forwards it to the usb modem see as a USB isn't part of network broadcast. I've uninstalled the USB driver off the pc that I've done most of my testing on, and still no joy.
then just to add to the frustration I tried to dial up without the telephone cable plugged in, and the error I am then given is "the remote computer is not responding"
have no idea what to try next really. I could format both machines and reinstall but there is not 100% certainty it will then work (although i'm fairly sure it would). spent a lot of time on the phone with telkom and with marconi, and never seem to be able to help me at this stage.
any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
