Line disconnecting on VDSL

I had a 4 Mbps line with MWeb, two weeks ago I upgraded to 20 Mbps
I have a TP Link TD-W8968 router (ADSL2+)

Was working fine on 4 Mbps
When I upgraded I was told I would need to get a VDSL router but as far as I know ADSL2+ supports 20 Mbps.

The first week my line synced at 20, now its normally 15 or 16, but that doesn't bother me much.
What is frustrating is randomly the line will disconnect & get "re-activated". It can go hours without doing it and then next thing do it 5 times in 10 minutes.

What could be causing this? Upgrade to VDSL router or something else?

hmm, my attenuation has gone downhill, it used to be excellent.
What could've caused it, I'm about 350m from the exchange

Lower attenuation is actually good whereas higher SNR is good.

As to why this happens I'm not sure. I'm having the same thing. Upgraded line to 10Mbps from 4Mbps and line didn't work. Eventually degraded so much I was syncing at 2.5Mbps. Waited over a month for a telkom techie to come out and although he said he didn't change anything my Attenuation went down from 22 on the downstream to 9 and the upstream went down from 11 to 3 so I switched to 10Mbps and attainable rate was around 24Mbps.

I should mention the SNR was around 27odd on downstream after the line got fixed and then hovered at 15 ish later on with the upstream SNR hovering at 6dB. When I checked again yesterday my attainable rate was around 14Mbps and I was syncing at 8Mbps with the attenuation up to 17 again on the downstream.

I suspect there's something wrong with the copper and this may be the case for you as well.

EDIT: About 30 min before the line got upgraded to 10Mbps this is what the line stats looked like. SNR went up to 38.5 at times after the conversion.

Just an update - checked line stats now again and it has once again changed. Still doesn't sync at 10Mbps for some reason.

Anyway I'll create a separate thread for these issues of mine. Thought it might be relevant to your scenario.

Is your area VDSL2 enabled? (your line attenuation is very low)

I recently moved my line to a new home;when Telkom came to do their magic, it initially sync'ed 20Mbps using ADSL2+ and the stats were terrible, even though I'm only around 100m away from the MSAN (Attenuation is <2dB).
The uplink did not like sync'ing at the full 1Mbps rate; max attainable was also around 900 odd kbps. Your stats seems similar to what I had.

Anyways, as soon as Telkom switched it to VDSL everything improved drastically; SNR's > 25dB and rock solid.

Perhaps you should upgrade to 20Mbps VDSL if you can; I'm not exactly sure why, but ADSL2+ seems to yield poor line stats when the copper loop is short; perhaps because of a lot more crosstalk with other VDSL syncs....

Hi, Thanks for the advice. My area supports 40Mbps; however would it really make a difference in my case since my router is not a VDSL router but ADSL2+? 20Mbps isn't that much more in monetary terms from 10Mbps but I figured since it gave issues on 10Mbps the first time around I could probably write 20Mbps on my behind?
 
Smurfatefrog, that jump in attenuation is big! There must be a physical issue on the line somewhere (ie a bad connection)

Do you have a phone plugged in and can you hear any noise ?
Have you checked all the connections inside your place, even where the line enters your house ?
Have you tried replacing the ADSL filter/splitter ?
Also check the cable between the router and the line socket.
If you can, replace all the wiring.

If none of that helped, you'll have to get Telkom involved.
 
And just like that my stats are now back to yesterday's!

No noise on the phone now, didn't check a few minutes ago though
I'll go check connections now
 
Outside connection seems normal
Tried another filter, same results

The little box where the line comes in the house though looks like this when opened, the purple & light blue wires are not connected to anything, is that right?

Good Afternoon, the line now seems to be syncing at 12476 kbps

The SNR and Attenuation statistic on the line is really good at the moment though.

SNR: 16.1 dB
Attenuation: 13.8 dB

The outcome here was that MWeb got hold of Telkom, they changed something on their side (didn't actually come to my place) and now I'm syncing at 21.5 Mbps and its very stable

They recreated your port. I suspect ASSIA has had something to do with your line stats and sync speed.

+1 on this AASIA tech, our vdsl has now been downgraded to an 8meg line. Apparently this new AASIA system automatically downgrades to ensure a more stable connection. fyi, our line is 1.2km from exchange.
