Well I'm not from Durban, but here in Bloem my exchange has also been dodgey. My line doesn't desync or anything, but yesterday my PPP light went off and after 3 hours I decided to call because previously it came back on by itself 3 weeks ago after 2.5 hours.
I called the dreaded 0800 DSL DSL and got through after 40 mins of holding
and they found that my exchange didn't receive any traffic from 12 o clock when it approximately went down. It has been back up, but was off again for about 20 mins a little while ago, and they haven't sent me a sms to say that the fault has been resolved, so do you guys think that they could still be investigating the problem ?
Plus my ingame latency has gone from 38ms - 44ms to 66ms to 95ms !!
PS: Soz od440 for derailing your thread a bit, but I think your exchange might be suffering from the same symptoms as mine.

Wierd, I'm in Joburg and the same thing has been happpening to me.
Modem is synched with the exchange, but I get disconnected.
I try reconnecting a few times, it fails a few times, then eventually connects. I've logged a call with my ISP and they've passed it onto Telkom.

Ice I'm on the Langenhovenpark exchange (I live in Universitas-Rif), and as you know LHP is expanding quicker than rabbits mating with one another.. 
But my friends that live in Universitas, also have had problems and their latencies are higher than normal as well, and also suffer from the internet being dead for 30mins or so, then its back online without desyncs from the exchange..

Ours at work dropped a few times in a row just now, but it seems fine now.
