I have been happy on 4MB for about a year now with no issue. So out of interest i went to the Telkom website and surprisingly it said I could upgrade to 10MB :D I phoned 0800375375 and got them to bump me up, but they guy said max 8MB. So he did it while I was on the phone.

I sync at:
DownStream Connection Speed 8032 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 640 kbps

Settings:
Multiplexing Method LLC-Based
VPI 8
VCI 35
DSL Mode ADSL (G.DMT)

Issue is now every 2 hours or so my line drops. Upstream and Downstream go to 0 kbps. I need to reboot my router or unplug the telephone cable and plug it back it to get it to connect again...

What gives? Do I have **** quality lines not able to handle 8MB?

Thanks!

Probably, if you can find your way around your router give your line stats like SNR Margin and Line Attenuation it will be helpful, or post your router brand name and model and if any one here has the same one they can guide you to find it. There are options were you can ask Telkom to lower it to 6MB.

Netgear DG834G (v3)

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8032 kbps 640 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 12 db

With that attenuation it's surprising you got even more then a 6meg line...

I was under the impression that they only upgrade those on ADSL2+ modulations... Maybe I should ask for an 8meg line as I'm also on G.dmt

You're pretty far from exchange and your noise margins are low. Ask them if it's possible to switch you over to ADSL2+ as that should be more stable at those higher rates. Otherwise you're going to have to try do something about that noise margin... one thing is to lower the rate, to say 6mbps. Otherwise check your POTS filters and make sure you're using good quality filters, and try get the last bit of line to your house rewired with twisted pair cabling - utp works great

Are noise margins supposed to be high or low? Which is better? Also what are decent stable SNR Margin and Line Attenuation readings?

Thanks for all the feedback. Just recently had my pots filters replaced and I can see the difference...I tried setting my modem to ADSL2+ but it just won't sync/connect.

Do Telkom need to make a change on their side to enable me to use ADSL2+? If so what do I ask the telkom guy over the phone?

If that doesn't work I will ask to be dropped to 6MB and see how it goes. I'm renting so the whole rewiring thing is a bit drastic for me :)

Appreciate the advice/tips/guidance!

Cheers

He is probably on a ADSL2+ exchange, his modem probably don't support it yet, with a very old firmware thats possible and would be why he is syncing at G.DMT as the DSLAM is just falling back into compatibility mode.

Or he forced his modem into G.DMT.

You preferably want your SNR to be at least 10, while your line will sync at 6 db, you will get lots of disconnects. Chances are you are just too far away from your exchange to have a stable 8mbit line.

My advice, get your line downgraded to 6mbit and see how that influences your SNR, whether it goes up to 10db at least, then you should have a stable line.

I'm with Tinuva: downgrade your line to 6Mbps, such that your SNR margin would stay at 12dB+.

Ok they dropped me to 6MB and here are my new stats:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6144 kbps 640 kbps
Line Attenuation 42 db 11.5 db
Noise Margin 11 db 12 db

That better?

Yes that is better: 3dB higher SNR margin on the downstream

I actually expected about 6dB SNR increase.

Thanks my line hasn't dropped once since I downgraded to 6MB  Lets hope that it stays this way :D

I had the same problem with my old 834 router.I also dropped to 6 m meg.Still on 6 megs but now I have A 2200n router.Should support a 8 meg line however a 6 meg line whats the differece. My router is stable.I am 2,4 Km from the exchange.

Yeah, with a better router like the Dlink 2500u (which costs next to nothing anyway), you could possibly even get away with 8Mbps on your line. A router change could make a big difference, indeed it plays a big role on my line :)
