Hi guys.

My 384kbps line is syncing at:

DownStream Connection Speed 192 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 128 kbps

It's not the filter or the router, but rather seems to be the copper line itself or the box up on the pole, how do I get Telkom to come out and rectify this or how do I fix this myself. Analogue call quality is atrocious, line constantly crackles. Line sync seems to change now and then when I power router off and force it to resync, goes to 192,288,328,or 384 (very very seldom) , atm it stucks on 192 and im using netgear 834G v3 with the 4.0.1.27 firmware - outside UK/NA.

Any idea's how I can get Telkom to come make a free inspection seeing as its their line thats bad...

Thanks
J

make sure the wiring on your main socket is ok (probably is), disconnect everything from the line and plug just a phone in.. if the call quality is still bad you can almost be certain that the problem is the line.

Armed with this evidence, call 10212 and give them your story. If the operator gives u a story that their only promise is that the line syncs, put down the phone, call again and speak to somebody else.

With some luck, they'll have a techie sent out to you. If they know what they doing, they will test and realise the line is faulty and do a switch. Telkom did this to my line about a year ago and all is well now.

If the techie brushes you off and says there is no problem, show they the crackling line and try explain your case. If that doesnt work, its back to 10212

Good luck

edit: unfortunately, the product is called "Up to 384k adsl" for a reason :/ If the line turns out ok, you could be too far from the exchange

My 2cents:

Disconnect EVERYTHING : phones , fax , filters . Just leave your ADSL router connected. Also try the stock 2meter RJ11 phone cable (one provided with netgear) - and use a telkom filter - not a netgear filter.

Having had past experiences with the whole sync procedure ect with telkom tech.dept - i can tell you that a 384 profile can sync as low as 192kbps. In such cases - you are either VERY far from the exchange - 6km+ or have a SEVERE problem on the line.

check the interval times from 10sec to 1 sec (router's webpage) - and keep an eye open....alternatively - download a program called routerstats (google it) and post a picture for us on photobucket.

I had the same problem once and to my surprise Telkom sorted it out in a day. There was a short on the line somewhere down the road. The lady I spoke to could actually check it from her end and could see that there was a problem.

So I phoned 0800 375 375 - waited for 30 mins before an agent became available :(

Then agent wants me to do a ftp speed test after i've told him many times that line sync speed is wrong even after unplugging filters/phones etc.

Insists I do ftp speed test and give them dl speed before fault will be logged, did so, hey what do you know - half line speed - woah thats hard to understand since I already said line syncs at half speed.

So now fault is logged, waiting on a resolution, doubt anything will happen though, they seem incompetent.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Update - 1 Day later , telkom reset the port, both phoned and sms'd me to say its fixed and low and behold it syncs at 384k , lets see how long that lasts, big up the beast you are slowly getting better.
