Line is 10Mbps capable... how about these DSL stats?

Recently phoned Telkom, said they could upgrade my line to 10Mbps. Since then (I'm hoping it's something else) my connection has been slow (100Kb/s download speeds on torrents). I just downgraded back to 4Mbps to check if it is actually the upgrade. Could anyone please have a look at these router stats, and comment on stuff like the attenuation etc?

Is a "high" (can't remember which way dB goes) attenuation good?

So it's actually :

DSL Noise Margin : Up 12.0dB Down 15.5dB
DSL Attenuation : Up 22.5dB Down 40.6dB
 
The downstream attenuation typically says a lot about the length of your line. At 40dB your line is roughly 3KM long, if the modulation is changed from G.DMT to ADSL2+, then you should get between 8 - 10mbps if the SNR is low enough. Check out http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php for more info about line stats.

Can I do that? Should Telkom? Can I ask them to do it?
 
It's not something you can change, but rather a setting which Telkom applies to the port. Currently your line is using G.DMT, which supports up to 8Mbps, but for line speeds 8 - 24Mbps, the modulation is generally set to ADSL2 or 2+. Telkom will set this when you upgrade to 10mbps. However, the modem will only sync up to a maximum of what your line stats will allow for. Have a look on the link, that site explains it all in detail.
 
You should be able to get a stable 6Mbps connection with G.Dmt modulation and that ADSL modem, but I'm not sure if 8Mbps would be stable.
If you change to ADSL2+ modulation, then you might actually be able to get a stable 8Mbps connection, but I highly doubt that you'll reach 10Mbps with that ADSL modem on that line of yours at all.
 
Where are you situated grimstoner? City + Suburb would help a lot.
It could be that you're on an oversubscribed/congested Telkom Exchange, although your latency is too low for something like that?

I would suggest that you try like a WebAfrica account to do the speed tests too, so that you're 100% sure that you're not getting poor download speeds due to shaping on the Mweb account.

I don't really trust SpeedTest.net results any more. I'd prefer to download like 100MB files off Microsoft instead, and then to take the average speed.
