I had my 10meg residential line installed in October last year, and it was syncing at a perfect 10240kbps for the first 6 months since installation.

Since March this year the line's only syncing at 8200 - 8600kbps.

Thought I'd phone Telkom to recreate the port, but the call centre person I spoke to told me he can't log a call because it won't even be looked at, as ADSL is a best-effort service "as per my contract" and only 10mb lines that sync below 5mb are looked at by the technicians.

Also, "the weather and rain could influence the speed at which my line syncs".

My question is, if my line was a perfect 10240kbps for the first 6 months, what has changed, or why can't the port be recreated at 10240kbps again?

Am I stupid or not up to date on how ADSL works, or should I pursue this with Telkom?

I'm located +- 1.5km away from my Telkom exchange.

I have the same problem, Telkom changed their dsl software now you are syncing at a lower speed.

Yup KZN had to bare the brunt of that system first. Useless in most cases. The only way to get it fixed is logging a fault and when they call you ask them to change the profile back to full 10Mbps.....

The call centre cannot change it anymore. You have to ask them to escalate it to the next Tier and insist on a ref number.

+1 Call center don't have much permission now - more like one big reception desk.
