I have had connection problems since the weekend.

The line has been up and down about every 30 seconds. Here is an extract of the log:

19:05:55 ADSL line is UP!
19:06:06 ADSL line is DOWN!
19:06:43 ADSL line is UP!
19:07:18 ADSL line is DOWN!
19:07:52 ADSL line is UP!
19:08:16 ADSL line is DOWN!
19:08:50 ADSL line is UP!
19:09:21 ADSL line is DOWN!
19:09:54 ADSL line is UP!
19:10:19 ADSL line is DOWN!
19:10:53 ADSL line is UP!

I have tried:
  • Rebooting the modem
  • Resetting the modem and starting the configuration from scratch as per the ISP's manual
  • Isolation test (unplug phone etc.)
  • Buying a new filter

So yesterday I had a Telkom technician over. Says the line is fine - must be my equipment. Or someone else on the same circuit may be having problems and I am getting the interference. Either way he can't (won't?) help me.

Which, I think, pretty much amounts to giving me the finger. So I still can't reliably get on the net and my connection is still useless (using a tethered cellphone to post this).

Pretty much ready to tear my hair out. Any advice?

Same problem here, except that the Telkom technician hasn't paid me a visit yet.

My line is very noisy as well. It's so frustrating having your surfing interrupted every +- 30 seconds.

Resolved

Tried another modem - works perfectly so this one (which was only three weeks old) was broken. It wasn't broken from the start though...

The problem of course is finding another modem to use for a test without laying down a huge wad of cash - had to promise a friend a case of premium beer before he would drive over with his to come test.:D

Will be returning the modem under warrenty. Incidently it's a Billion 7401VGP

Just came home and looked at my router logs. It seems that today, my adsl line has been up for a good 12 hours without a single disconnect.

The Telkom technician has not paid me a visit yet, I still have my noisy line, but the ADSL works (well international doesn't work all that well, but that's another issue). I also checked that I am still syncing at my normal speeds (384k & 128k) and nothing has changed there.

Whatever was causing my +-30 second disconnects is now gone. I hope it stays this way.

I'm at a friends place who was having the same issue. I tried my router too but exactly the same thing. We're in Sunninghill.
