Hi

I recently applied for an ADSL conversion on my home line, when the technician from Telkom came to test the cable he diagnosed that the line could not support ADSL (high resistance) (im 2.5km from the exchange)and my order was cancelled, does anyone know if this is standard procedure, does it mean Telkom cannot replace,or repair the line ?
must i wait another six weeks, to be given a proper answer, Telkom just push me from pillar to post, and so far I havn't been able to get any answers from them, it would appear this forums users are more knowledgable, and capable of providing me with useful information than Telkom themselves.

However, we had the same issue with our line. Telkom came, tested and told us our line was to put it blunt, crap. Ironicly, the line was recently fitted to our road, so a couple phone calls later, new test and miracles happened and low and behold, our line was fine. I do not trust that test they do. Sound as if they get some guy to stand on one end, wet his fingers and send 220v down the line and if he feels anything, then the line is okay...

lol waaay too funny neobyte ... maybe they even do the tongue test like you do with a 9v battery [:)]

We are Telkom - Resistance is Futile - You will be Assimilated

Do NOT trust Telkom - fight and b*tch until they sort it out.

I applied in APRIL 2004 and by August was told the line is not compatible (many calls to Telkom in between).

I then REAPPLIED, and lodged a dispute against the original cancellation (September 8, 2004). Yesterday (22 /09/ 04), TWO telkom technicians arrived, one for each of my two orders = go figure!

Hi,

i have the same problem. The only thing to do, it seems, is to keep on phoning relentlessly.
I've heard that one way to combat the rubbish line is to order ISDN. They have to convert the line. Once this is done, order ADSL, but tell them you want to keep ISDN. They would then have to lay a new line. Once the ADSL is in, cancel the ISDN.

I haven't tried it, so i can't confirm that it would be a solution, but i think they have to convert your line to digital for ISDN, which means they can't use that line for ADSL.

SNOT: If this is true, this implies that ISDN enjoys 'preferred status' when it comes to technical rollouts. So, what guarantee is there that Telkrap would indeed install ADSL subsequent to installing ISDN, other than the fact that you would be considered a 'preferred client', presumably? If this scenario indeed works, I believe it to be grounds for heavy pressure to be brought to bear on someone at Telkrap, as this type of market segmentation practice is highly unethical - technical management cannot, should not and must not be a mechanism for the deliberate disadvantaging of prospective ADSL users, in favour of (ostensibly) higher ISDN revenues...

they can run ADSL over ISDN but they dont ... you can drop the ISDN for a 200+ rand fee and downgrade to a normal line

Quick update, apparently the faulty cable has been replaced, and I now await an ADSL installation in the week to come, my standard dialup is still as poor as it was before the "repair" so im not certain of the quality of ADSL service ill receive, or if this is an indication at all.Ill let you know more when I know more, thanks for all the support

Hi G

It seems you are sorted but just to tell u I had a similar story, they said my current line in Cape Town didn't pass all the ADSL conformance tests. One of the technicians over the phone (he was in Durban!) told me to try and apply for a new ADSL line which would force them to test other cables available. They've just done that and found one that was allright. So I'm getting that new installed and then I will "simply" cancel my existing phone line and transfer my phone number to the new one... "just" an extra R200 odd for the new line!

Cheers
Jose

Hi all

Everythings installed, new cable from the poll, new wall boxes etc and so far so good, everything works well

Hi mbs,
as i said, i haven't tried it, only heard about it.
I don't know if ISDN clients would get 'preferred status' as such. The angle i was looking at it from was basically 'taking' the old line away so that mokleT can't use it as an excuse for not installing ADSL.
There is no guarentee that they would install a second line, but aything is worth a try.
With no competition, and no sign of any in the near future, all is fair in love and war.

SNOT: K.. see what you mean. Would be real interesting if someone tries this and provides evidence that it worked - grounds for an outcry...

This is what happened to me.
I’ve applied for ADSL about 18 month ago. They did the test and told me I was
Too far from the exchange.I was told to try again later in the year. So every month
I would send a faxed application for ADSL instaliation. In the mean time I got ISDN
And was paying about 1200 rand for my internet a month. After about 6 faxes and 6
Month of trying for ADSL, somebody from Telkom phoned me and asked me if I was
Stupid.”What” I said.”What do you mean?”.The lady explained to me,”you are too
Far from the exchange, that means NO ADSL FOR YOU”.I asked maybe in a year or so ?
The answer was NEVER.
Then Sentech came around.THANK YOU I said to guy up there.I cancelled my ISDN got Sentech and I was the happiest person on earth.
We know the good stuff about Sentech , so I thought I’ll give it a try and phone Telkom
Again. 10217 ……Can I have ADSL by my place ,please…..Sure .….so I have ADSL installed.I’m up and running. I also asked if they have built any exchanges in my area
In a last year.Guess what ? the answer was NO .NOT in the last 10 years.ANY COMMENTS ?

Only comment i have is: Typical.

Kareda, how on earth did you move your house closer to the exchange[:D]

I am now in the same situation regarding the exchange.
Given all the bleakness around the iBurst softlaunch IE cap, cost etc, i decided to reapply for ADSL.
I phoned yesterday and the techie arrived today to test the line. Hat's off to them for the fast service.
After checking the actual distance, 4.3km's, as opposed to my original estimate of 2.3km's (hey, how was i to know the line takes a left into William Nicol ;) ) he deemed my line fit for ADSL access. Amazing what can happen when you get the proper support. The previous techie, Moses, who was assigned to do my installation didn't even pitch up to test the line, he just said i was too far away from the exchange and they cancelled my order.

This could also be due to the fact that the first time i applied, i didn't have a voice line account with Telkom, which i now do......! Makes you think.
Anyway, if all goes well, i should be reconnected in the next few weeks.

Quick update.
Telkom phoned me this morning to tell me that they will be coming to do the installation on Thursday.
One week, order-to-installation. Not bad. Doesn't make up for the 6 months they wasted by not testing my line in the first place, but hey, at least i'll be connected again soon.

Hi There
I was having a chat with a Telkom techie the other day, and he mentioned protocol had changed on the testing of lines, apparently Telkom are not testing anymore, but "estimating" functionality instead, in order to snapup the market before Feb, this may lead to installations being done on older cable infrastructure, and may not give the consumer the desired or expected speed and performance, so make sure to hang around while the install takes place, test before the techie leaves, and dont sign the job off until you are happy with the functionality, Telkom have plenty clauses in their contracts, they can reference if you complain about the poor performance at a later stage.
