Hi, as of yesterday I experienced some slow speeds so I logged on to my router and noticed my line speed was syncing at 1024 kbps instead of 2048 kbps. Today morning I logged in and it was syncing at 1948 kbps and as of now it is syncing at 1472 kbps. Here's my ADSL status:

I think the attenuation is too high. Could it be a router problem or congested exchange ?

It's not congested exchange. It's relatively low SNR combined with Telkom's new automatic line management system (which from all of my own experiences, seems to be doing more harm than good)

+1

@op should still be able to handle atleast 2Mbps stable with those stats. That said damn op you are far the exchange but with a SNR of 9dB you should still be able to be stable @ 2048k

I just checked now and it's syncing at 1984 kbps downstream and the SNR Margin (Downstream) changed to 6.5 db. It happened when I lost connection. I don't know why the downstream is fluctuating like this. The upstream seems to be stable

Your connection will drop at 6.0db, and become unstable at anything below 10.0db. Basically your attenuation is too high. I'd look at a WISP unless Telkom can shorten your loop

This is me after last weeks loadshedding. I'm on a 4MB line, which was working perfectly before.

Yeah, with a line attenuation of 63.5... damn you lucky to be getting 2mbps. In perfect conditions you could possibly eak out 2.5mbps.

Personally i would ask Telkom to stabilise your line on 1.5mbps and just keep it there until they put in a new exchange or possibly consider some 3G \ LTE Cards for your laptop or PC

Very unlucky situation :(

Thanks for the responses, I also randomly lose connection and I was starting to think it's my modem but now it could be due to my crappy line, could that cause loss of connection ?, also would switching isp's help ? or is it just down to being too far away from the exchange ?

It's a physical telkom issue, best would be to switch to a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) or ask telkom to first consider shortening your loop

I don't think going wireless would be an option for me especially because the data is too expensive and I play allot of online games

I also went onto the ADSL checker site and after entering my landline number I get greeted with this

Don't know what it means but maybe the exchange is becoming too congested

Also, how does this shortening of the loop work ?

I'm not talking about 3G when I'm referring to a WISP, there are some very decent uncapped packages with low ping that work with gamers quite well, a quick search through the forums will bring a fair bit of info on that topic up

Shortening the loop is a headache, to say the least, it literally means telkom shortening the distance between your house and it's DSL equipment which is either in an exchange, or on the side of the road (the rectangular white boxes)

80% of the time it won't happen unless you get a lot of your neighbors to sign a petition and basically make a business case for telkom to invest in your area and lay Fibre and install MSAN'S or DSLAM'S

This is why I say going wireless is a better option, BitCo, and Amobia are some, to name a few

Okay I just checked now and my line speeds seem to be normal again syncing at 2048 kbps. Attenuation is still bad but that's fine as long as I get my full speed. Hopefully is stays like that.

Thanks for all the input :)
