10Mbps line.

I requested an upgrade to 20Mbps, which was approved, but later turned down, for reasons unsure.

I have been monitoring the line sync speed everyday, since the application was made, and since then, the sync speed
keeps on changing, ranging randomly from 0.3Mbps to 3Mbps to 5Mbps to 8.9 Mbps back to 2Mbps and such, randomly going up and down.

Even if the line looses sync, should it not connect at the same, set speed again?
If there are issues with the line, causing the sync speed to go down to a stable speed, why does it go back up to 9Mbps later on, on some days.

Is there an automatic tool that monitors the line quality, and sets the speed accordingly?
I was under the impression it was done physically by an "operator"

I pm'd TelkomZA, but I assume he has his hands full.

Eventually, after a few days I called Telkom itself, and spoke to an agent, who spoke to "technical support", but after +-80 minutes on the phone, yesterday, waiting for an answer, the line died, and I then had to go pee VERY urgently. Do not want to try THAT again.

What am I not understanding?

Hi ttygt, this sounds like you are having an SNR or Attenuation Issue on your line. that is intermittent i have seen the same kind of issues on three other lines. Please see this link for a better understanding of the SNR and Attenuation Ratios.
This can be due to the line on from on your property or the Telkom line from your property to the exchange.

Yep, sounds like that to me too. After some rains recently I had to downgrade my line speed from 10mbps to 8 in order to get a stable sync.

I have no problems with speed, have problems with high ping most of the time its x3 where it should be. For example I stay 20km from Durban but getting 90ms to there.

Exactly what I thought when I encountered this problem a few weeks ago.

The sync speed would change without the line disconnecting. TelkomZA investigated but couldn't find any problems.

In this case I swapped out the modem (DSL-2500U) and the problem vanished.

I have the same modem and the same problem since i asked for 20mb upgrade in speed, i log into the modem periodically to check the speed and it changes, going to get the Netgear, as the Pace was useless.

Thanx very much for all the replies.

I do have SNR that is lower than 12, so I can understand there may be periodic disconnections, and I can live with them.

I do also have several spare modems, and will swop out the current Intellinet with another when I get home, and report back my observations.

Again thank you for the responses.

Jip. Month old Intellinet, mucking about.
Tested with old Intellinet, and old Planet modems, stable speed.
Brand new Huawei HG532s installed, stable speed.

Cannot figure why the Intellinet modem did this, but it did coincide with Telkom's attempt to increase my line speed from 10 to 20 Mbps. Something strange happened then.......

I'm just a lay person, no internet whiz by any means...just highly frustrated with my current internet speed.
I'm using mweb all inclusive uncapped on 2mbps (far off from the 20mbps discussed here) and its very frustrating. I've requested a 4mbps but thats now up to telkom to upgrade the exchange in my area only if need be.

The 2mbps would suffice our household internet needs if it was actually near 2mbps: it fluctuates between 0.4mbps and 1.7mbps in a day. i've contacted mweb and they just reset and change ports or whatever else they do.

Its very frustrating and internet is not cheap either

I Hope someone can advise what to do or how to solve this problem.
