LinkedIn got me a job

I received an invite from the hr of a company to apply to start up a new department but I am quite happy where I am at :)
 
I also found some really great opportunities on linkedin, I think it's just where the exciting stuff is happening right now. The social network part of it is what makes it work but at the same time it's what makes it really irritating.

Linkedin really likes to spam you, I think out of all the things I'm on it is the most intrusive. Then you also can't look at a profile or job without it being announced to the entire world. It's a lot of work to make your profile sufficiently quiet without disappearing.

How did you manage to get to past 400 contacts? Are most of them recruiters perhaps?

I'm also at 700 or so. I only add a recruiter if they place me (so I've only got about 2 or 3 of them), and I don't add people I don't know (I get a lot of connection requests from eager students). I find that I picked up about 200 or so from my last two companies each, and the rest are a combination of vendors that I've worked with and people I went to university with. I expect that people who move in and out of big companies quite frequently (every 2-3 years), probably have many more contacts (I guess, approx 200 per company).
 
Yup it certainly helped secure this job I have now and got me a few opportunities before that I didn't follow through.
 
Sometimes when you want to add people you need to have the email address of them.... Damn it can become a pain as well.
 
Yeah true, just say you were a former colleague of the person at a previous employer, that way it lets you add em and nobody else sees that.

Depends on the person you are inviting. You can set requirements for friend requests - stops 'random' strangers from adding you.

I have about 300 to 400 FB friends. The overlap is probably less than 100 or so people. I don't generally add friends to LinkedIn unless they're in the same industry (I do accept requests not to be rude though).
 
I'm quite paranoid with LinkedIn, deliberately put wrong info on companies I work for, but skills are accurate,

That way if i apply, my CV does the talking not LinkedIn profile.

Don't really think it's wise to have all your info in one place....
 
My company has actually given up on traditional recruitment agents and has started using Linkedin in conjunction with an internal technical recruiter and the HR team to vet applications.

Especially for technical personnel, recruitment agents are pretty useless, unless they are ex-tech themselves.

And if they cross check your LinkedIn they'll think you are a liar?

Yeah, big corporates take background checks extremely seriously. They'll cross-check your CV against your credit record, to determine if you had any employers you haven't disclosed on your CV. Just put it all down.
