Linking IP Camera to home alarm system...

Hi Guys,

I've been looking at putting up CCTV around my house - looking at IP cameras (there are quite a few makes to choose from), which I want to link as a zone on our alarm system.

Has anyone done this successfully? How does it work? Most of the cameras come out with a digital I/O output - I would imagine you would need a PCI Digital I/O expansion card, which will send the signal to your alarm box?

I suppose you can also then set time based trigger zones via the camera interface/software, which will only send a signal to the alarm if movement is detected during a scheduled trigger zone?

Any ideas / suggestions will be much appreciated..

I won't suggest that you do it, bugs will keep on tripping the alarm. I tried this some time ago and there is simply no way that I found to do this reliably, moths and other bugs fly directly into the camera due to the IR lights on them and thereby triggering the alarm.

That pi camera looks like it would beat the pants off any typical "cctv" cam.

100% accurate. The false alarms from curtains flapping, shadows moving and leaves blowing will drive you insane. As for the PCI card, that wouldn't be necessary as you would run the cables from the camera I/O directly to the panel, configuring the NO/NC status in the camera settings, but as mentioned, it is not recommended at all.

Rather get some hi def cctv cams and a DVR. most decent DVRs have sensitivity settings on the alarm zones and an output for an alarm system.

I have both 3 IP cams on blue iris and DVR with 6 cams .

Must admit i have not tried to link any of them to an alam system.
