Can anything be gained by running two linked routers in terms of download speed?
 
No, not if you are referring to the download speed supplied by your ISP.. Whatever speed you are paying your ISP to provide you, is what you get..

With DSL you can bond two DSL lines but, that means paying extra for that..

Well I guess you could but you would need 2 routers. 2 simcards and like a load balancer that can balance the load from the 2 routers to get max speeds. Single threaded downloads won't increase but stuff like torrents and multi connections might see an increase but probably not going to be worth it.

Rather get a better LTE-A router and a antenna on the right frequency. That is a more suitable solution.
