Hi Guys need a bit of help dont know if i am n noob or what but i bought a linksys e4200 and the connection at the back for internet is a 8 pin connection and the phone line is a 4 pin so i have tried to put the 4 pin phone connection in the router and it doesn't work so what do i need to do?

Is there a converter from 4 to 8 pin or do i need to get telkom to change the phone socket from a 4 to a 8 (dont know if its possible) or any other assistance/suggestions welcome!

Tx

I have the same Linksys model... However, that device is not a modem... You need to take a normal Ethernet cable from your modem, into the network port that looks like the normal RJ11 socket which you are trying to plug the phone line into.

Ok let me just get this... so i need to plug my phone line into my Netgear D-link router then from the d-link i need to connet it from 1 of the 4 ethernet ports to the syslink internet socket? If not please assist in what modem i need to buy. Thanks for the assist!!

Almost right... ok, you are lucky in the sense that I have the same hardware as you, so I can guide you through how I set mine up...
Your phone (internet) line, still plugs into your Netgear MODEM... Now you need to set your netgear up to act as ONLY a modem and not a router + modem... On my netgear DG834GT you can only set the bridging mode on via the "hidden" settings panel... you access this via :

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm

You log in... set the netgear to MODEM only mode....

From your netgear modem you take a normal ethernet cable and use any of the existing ports on the netgear ... plug the other end into the INTERNET port on your E4200...

Put your username + password into the E4200 websetup page (192.168.1.1) ... then your internet will work...

Hope that helps you. :)

Thanks Pornolio you saved me from hours of frustration!!!!:D

One last tip... if your netgear supports it... do yourself one MASSIVE favour and upgrade the firmware to the DGteam firmware...
The adsl modem drivers are top notch... and they have numerous tweaks added to the router's options... and the kernel is on a Linux 2.6 kernel.
The standard netgear firmware is shocking to say the least...
