Linksys has produced an easy to setup and manage Internet based surveillance system that is more than capable of receiving clear images and discernible audio.

The Linksys unit is a surveillance camera for the smaller office. It is designed for the likes of a boss who may want to keep an eye on the office while travelling and would rather see what is going on in their absence than be told.

In this regard, the Linksys Internet camera works very well. While it may not have the best optics in the business, it is more than up to the task for regular monitoring, and the picture it produces is adequate even in low light conditions, provided that you set it up correctly.

The unit itself is made out of a sturdy plastic and feels firm, despite its stand being less than ideal in design.

Aesthetically there’s nothing to complain about, it looks a little more modern than other PTZ camera’s but aside from that it’s by and large what you may have seen before from other manufacturers.

The small CCD used in the camera has a wide viewing angle across both axis and allows you to view a relatively large area. There is no optical zoom functionality and all you have at your disposal is 2X digital zoom, which is anything but useful as it just produces a larger mess of the picture at best.

The camera motion can be programmed to nine different positions which it can cycle through while recording video. It can also be set to wait at each position for a few seconds just like you would a normal video surveillance camera.

Motion detection is also supported, however depending on where the camera eye is, it can either be very sensitive (which isn’t a problem really) or non responsive
completely.

The included software allows you to save the video feed in one of two formats, either Motion-JPEG or MPEG 4 which will be playable on most players from most operating systems.

Where compatibility is concerned, the included software is only compatible with Internet E xplorer which, while not a train smash, limits its uses for those who use other web browsers.

Overall the unit does what it claims to do; while images may appear to be darker than what one would desire, this can be fixed by fine tuning the camera using the provided software.

If you’re looking for an affordable way to monitor your office’s activities, the Wireless-G PTZ Internet camera may be just what you need.
