I have just installed a linksys wrt54G.

I am new to this, and I thought I would start this thread so that we can ask questions and maybe there is someone who can answer.

But from what I have learnt is that a wrt is not just a router. It is a linux computer.

And there is so much work being done wrt (with respect to) modified and improved firmware.

But the main question I have is has any one installed the Alchemy Pre7a either by sveasoft or the tag free version by "the individual"?

I'm also new to this arena, got my wrt a month ago, already been active in 'fixing it'
I've been running an openwrt for a while, really great, if u got the time to figure out the structure, and don't mind the lack of GUI, It can do almost anything you need it to do!
if you want to run openwrt and have a v2.2 WRT, the standard buildroot has no support for v2.2 Our friend theRodent has nicely patched it for support on 2.2, I'd recommend theRodents over the currently unsupported openWRT beta build.

7a is like the rest of alchemy, patched over to hide the defects, but apparently is running quite well.

DD-WRT Is currently simply a fork off sveasofts buggy alchemy code!
The benefits are Radius authentication, and one or 2 small additions, such as an extra status page.

The project has great potential, and the designer started out with great intentions, but it seems work has slowed drastically. If he succeeds, it will be a great firmware, with many features, and hopefully not too bloated (He wants to make it a barebone with additional components installable)

My advise to you, is to install something that suits your needs, not to be overeager to get the biggest firmware, if you don't need the features, don't install them, each one places more stress on the small space available. It has been observed by people that the more feature packed the firmware, the more latent the link speed.

If you like the GUI, but want something more, I highly recommend ewrt, it currently lacks WDS support, which I'm sure will be added soon, otherwise, it can be configured from the shell, the Cool part about it is that its a fork from linksys latest firmware (Less bloat than sveasoft), with a jffs2 partition (taken from openwrt), to enable write access to drivespace. So one can add their own binarys to it in order to extend the capabilities!

Good luck!
