Hey all

What are the differceces between the two devices? I know the wrt54g is more expensive but is there anything I need to take into concideration when buying?
I want to upgrade the firmware to dd-wrt. Sorry if this is a silly question...

Thanks

wrt54gl without a doubt. The L stands for linux. You can install linux onto it. Its a wonderful router. You can install dd-wrt onto the wrt54gl. I have.

they can all run dd-wrt/linux to an extent (the wrt54g v5 is a bit crippled, but the rest are all great). some have more flash memory than others, the wrt54gl doesnt excel at this compared to certain other revisions.
go see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G
if you buying new, then getting a wrt54gl is a pretty safe bet, if buying secondhand, then finding a wrt54gs with a 8mb/32mb combination is a great deal.

p.s. been running a wrt54g v4 with ddwrt for a while now, sweet as can be.

Actually, WRT54G from v2 (or so, even then you're deeply unlikely to find one that old) to v4 ..and then WRT54GL v1.x - which is a renamed v4 being as the hardware changed for the v5.

Can anybody explain in English why i should install dd-wrt.I googled but don't really understand anything. Can i live without it?What does it add to my router's features?

You dont need dd-wrt, unless you want to use your router to connect to another network.

Instead of having badly written limited firmware (hard software) controlling the routers hardware, you can install your own "operating system" on it. In this case it is dd-wrt. It allows for more services and more control and better use of the router's hardware. Services like ssh or bandwidth monitoring or such.

dd-wrt has gimped my router though...

It drops it's bridge connection just for the fun of it and is entirely to unreliable for my linking...

I am buying a new access point now

Im happy with dd-wrt though :)

dd-wrt on LinkSts WRT54GL much more configurable. 5x Ethernet ports can function as intelligent switch. Linux platform provides advanced routing, firewalling etc.

Client-Bridge mode and PPTP connections on device makes life much easier
