Hey all,

I found a Linksys WRT54GL when I was packing up my parents. Ive had it for ages and when I was a little younger my father got some guy to set up a connection for us and he used this.

Now im not too clued up regarding routers and splittling traffic etc so i was wondering, what the hell does the linksys router do? I know they are classic pieces of hardware and if it helps I would like to connect it to my current router. But I still need to know what its purpose is...lol

thanks,

very robust router. especially with 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt. gatecrasher has a thread dedicated to splitting local and international traffic on the router itself instead of using something like routesentry.

I have 3 of them. One with the 1gig SD mod :D

You plug an adsl modem in one end and some computers in the other end or wifi. You enter your adsl account details on it and then it connects everything to the internet.

Ha, that much I get...but why? Why doesnt someone just buy a wireless router. At least someone of my technical 'expertise'.

With gatecrashers script you can then split local and international traffic in the router instead of with route sentry on you computer. Then your entire household can split their traffic without your computer having to be on.

Depends on if its a broadband or adsl router. Mine is a broadband router. Used it for Iburst. Also running DD-WRT on it.

for non internet purposes you can use it as an AP or bridge. for an internal wireless network.

Edit: your is not wireless?? Oooh...

Its a good router. has it got a RJ11 (Telephone - ADSL) or RJ45 (Network Plug for devices like iBurst) female end for the internet?

It is a wireless router...

I think what you would be referring to is an "adsl wireless router" or more technically a adsl modem/wireless router combo.

On my home network I have 1 adsl modem connecting to the line, and then 2 wireless routers (like a WRT54GL). The first router does not connect to any ISP. You connect to the wireless and then you dial up whichever ISP you want to use. (Or use RASPPPoE and you can dial a local and intl at the same time and split between them etc). Anyone connecting to this router uses their own ISP account basically. The other router connects to my Afrihost account itself, so you just connect to it and use it. This works much better with devices that either can't dial PPPoE (cellphones, ipod touch) or where the pppoe support sucks a bit (xbox 360 loses its lan connection when dialing pppoe).

That's just one scenario of course. But basically by seperating the devices instead of an all in one combo it gives you a bit more control. The main reason the WRT54GL is so popular is because it's firmware can be flashed and it was used extensively for community mesh networks and such.

I wouldnt know how to check the difference. Normal network cables do fit into it...lol

If its a Wireless Broadband router, it will have 4 normal Network plugs at the back with an extra one (5th one) about 10mm to the left of the first four (presuming you are looking at the router from the back) Above the 5th plug it will have "Internet" written down. This should be the same as a normal RJ45 (network cable plug). If it is an ADSL router, it will have an RJ11 (smaller than the RJ45 plug) into which the ADSL line plugs into (this is a normal telephone jack).

I have mine on my desk in front of me right now. I will post sum pics in 5....

Its definitely the exact same as yours. I was having difficulty getting it connected. I will try again tonight and see if I have any luck.
