This is probably a dumb question but i just bought a Linksys WRT54GL router from pcmall, please could someone tell me if i still need to have a broadband modem in order to connect to my adsl connection? Or will this device allow me to connect to my adsl service and route the connection to the different pc's in my house?

WRT54GL does not have a adsl modem built-in. It does have a WAN/internet port to which you should connect your adsl modem.

The WRT54GL can then connect to the modem using PPPOE, and then route all the connected PC's to the internet.

the wrt54gl is a wireless router....with ethernet jacks only///.so you would need a seperate broadband modem to connect your adsl line to.

Cool thanks guys.. Have to get a modem 2morrow then.
Anyone have any suggestions on a decently priced modem?

The Billion modems are quite good and reasonably priced

Check the forums for info on Billions.

I can suggest the ADSL2MUE modem from Linksys. Very stable and reliable. Supports both PPPoE and bridged mode.

the Dlink 1 ports are quite cost effective and would serve your need perfectly.

Irony is that most of the listed modem have built in routers.

I've just been given the option to swap for the Linksys WAG354G which includes a modem. Just wondering if anyone has used this and which would be better, keeping the WRT54GL and getting a modem or swapping for the WAG354G.

try swopping it for a billion 7202g wireless adsl/2 router :D ... very easy setup ... lots of features. used one for a client of mine ... very nice. if my mem  serves me right it has detachable aerials so you can increase its range ...

WRT54GL is a great router for hacking, output can be boosted from the standard 25mw to 251mw just by loading extra firmware.

I would keep the WRt54G

NOOOOO dont swop it, keep the Linksys WRT54GL, just buy the Linksys ADSL2MUE from pcmall. Best combination :)

Anyone else trying to convince you not to keep the WRT54GL knows absolutely jack about the OpenSource GPU features or Wi-Fi.

Btw, if you have that wireless broadband router, you can climb onto the Johannesburg Wireless User group, if you're in JHB ofcourse .

And no, Linksys is the cheapest & Best.

Keep that GL, it's far better, however don't flash it unless you intend to use it for a long range WLAN as some suppliers will have serious contention about swapping it out should it have been previously flashed.

If you decide to use the router to connect to the mesh, you would need another one for your internal network, as the one connected to the mesh just becomes a wireless bridge.

Although I agree, the Linksys is a very cheap and good platform for mesh connectivity it's by no means the best. I would always recommend a Mikrotik RB112 with a CM9 radio card. (that's another story though).

I would recommend getting an ADSL modem to go with that WRT because it's got some really nice functionallity even with the default software installation.

hehe @ mikrotik, the guy wants a normal wireless, not a WISP *hideS* :P

Hehe, no seriously... I had a planet wireless access point on my roof first... I got like 3 - 10Kbits per second... as soon as I stuck the RB112 in my speed shot to an average of 8Mbits per second.

I know the planet was a bad choice, but no one had any stock of the RB's and I had access to the planet.

A friend of mine had a WRT on his roof and was getting about 1Mbit, now with the RB he's getting between 3 and 4... I think the CM9 card is just much more powerful than the WRT's even with the new OS.

Besides all that, who wants to turn a perfectly good WRT into a pretty redundant bridge, when you can use a RB instead and have awesome functionality and control.
