So we have a windoze 2008 r2 AD server in the office. Is it possible to set up Linux on a seperate storage box and make it available through AD? I want to avoid users having to maintain a second password just to access a file share. Is there another way to go about this without buying windows server again?

Ok, apologies, I was too hasty in posting here... it seems it's not too difficult to do with Winbind and Ubuntu Server...

I must just make sure I know how to set up domain user and group rights to the file system...

There's another way that you can skin this particular cat that you might consider.

Use NAS4Free on your storage box(es) connected to your AD server via a dedicated storage Gigabit LAN. Configure your storage as iSCSI targets (like this) and then connect your AD server to the iSCSI target (Like This.)

Then you pretend that the iSCSI target is a really big, flexible physical hard drive on your AD server and no need to configure CIFS/SMB (which NAS4Free also supports.) Of course you could do this with Linux but I just suggest Nas4Free as it's fairly user friendly.
