What is best? a PC based PIII Linux router server and DG834G in modem mode, or a Netgear DG834G set on router+modem

I found the DG834G has a issue with lost quality and packets in router mode and are thinking to use a PIII with linux as router server with freesco V2 software

Any advise, tips experience would be appreciated !

There is no choice here at all. A linux firewall is a hell of a lot better then any router, I pc preforms and has alot more features then most affordable routers.

The Netgear DG834 IS a Linux Box! The entire Operating system is Open-Source.

Thanx for the info RichardP, I know and have the source files.. How do You use it, how can I change it as with a PC. I can host a mini site or web page with PC..With DG?? unless I use DMZ?......Still have to find all this out. Any ideas solutions ? I am in electronic's but the warranty prevented me from peeking as Yet , only three weeks old

Hi there,

use the DG824, and point a firewall rule to the webserver, only port 80. I really dont think its an easy task to add pages to the webserver (or really feasable) but I am sure u can add pages with some effort.

I will take a peek at how to do it..... will keep u informed on my progress (I am using the latest DG834 Beta firmware.. the VPN/Freeswan facility is brilliant)

Never done that as I just use the firewall rule and point to a crappy web-server. ;-)

Stay tuned
Richard

Bleh, people always try be "hardcore" with their linux servers. Were not protecting the pentagon here boys and girls. Any decent router with built in firewall is MORE than adequate for protecting ure pc, and has more than enough settings and optimizations to play with.

Just go for the router

:)

Sorry killer thats not what it is all about, Extra facility's like DIY web server, e-mail server, etc...comes in mind. Also auto routing scripts....Adaptive firewall and more and more...

Then again I would not like my data to be corrupt just because a boy with a toy hacked me for his evening pleasure....LoL

Personally, I'm more comfortable using just the router. One less point of failure. If the routers got issues though, that's different.

Why don't you just use the DG834 as a gateway, and add the linux box for other stuff? The DG843(G) by the way cannot operate in router (bridged) mode - only in router mode. If you want bridged mode, go for the DG632.

I have a DG632 running in router mode, behind it I have my linux box, which is my proxy, mail relay, ect, but also where I schedule downloads and have my torrents running so that I can carry my notebook around without interrupting my downloads.

Actually the DG834 family can function in bridged mode ... you must enter a undocumented URL in the webadmin to get to a hidden menu option.

Can repost it tonight if you are interested.
