Linux Career Advice

Done & passed your LPIC-1, RHCSA, A+, N+ all self-study route. These days it's better with free IT books online to complement your knowledge, thus I ask where may I intern or start so as to gain relevant experience?

Get a job with a Web Hosting or ADSL ISP. Then get to know one of the Sys Admins like I did who helped me out alot in learning Linux commands etc. I was given a chance to setup servers which was loads of fun.

But after doing all this I realised most of this I could've learned myself with Xenserver or HyperV on a testbox at home. :)

I am looking for Linux admins, we are a Linux-only company heavily focused on opensource with 47 released projects. I am only after someone who is crazy about Linux and wants to opensource his soul ;)

Currently there is a position open in Cape Town, Southern Suburbs.

Drop me a PM if you're interested.

And if Cape Town is too slow (or too far) for you, drop me a PM for opportunities in Bryanston

What level of sysadmin is the position for? Entry level, Junior, Intermediate, Senior?
And salary bracket?

It really depends on the person. Probably more Intermediate+.

R10k-R25k

The full details are in the IT Jobs forum.

I have an opening at bidorbuy - junior to intermediate and salary would be up to about 27K depending on skill-set. Our HR team will post the official job-spec in the jobs forum today, but in the meantime here is the one on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/jobs2/view/5889646 (BTW: there is a 10K "bounty" for any referrals - so if you are clever you get your friend to refer you and split the bounty).

After wading through over 50 applications via LinkedIn alone, I just want to highlight the following suggestions:

  • For the love of all things sacred, please pick a professional picture - here are some examples of what should not happen (and no, this was not taken of Grindr/Tinder):
    linkedinprofiles.jpg
--- If you happen to know any of those people, please tell them. As appealing as it might be, bikini shots (unless you are a model applying for a model job) are also not on ---
  • Maintain your LinkedIn profile - it is your career selling point. LinkedIn also shows profile suggestions, and I immediately drop people who lack a photo or detailed profile
  • Why can people not be bothered to camel-case their names? Even if you have a perfect CV, I will discard you as it seems you could not be bothered to spell your name properly

BTW: My all time favorite LinkedIn picture was of a local Java dev who was spread on a bed "gangsta" style with 50 Rand notes, gold chains, nun-chucks, combat knifes and two bottles of J&D - just leave those pictures on Facebook....

FWIW - not even our educators can get it right: https://twitter.com/gerdnaschenweng/status/555266214097068032

You should hire the penguins on the left, they obviously know a thing or two about Linux.

They are also easily incentivised with fish :p

They look more like <flamesuit> Microsoft engineers </flamesuit> - group hug before clicking on that Windows update button.
