Linux: Datacard

Anyone managed to get 3G and Fedora Core 3 working on a desktop? I've installed a PCI cardbus bridge (obtained from Vodashop), but when I plug in the 3G card ... nothing. I've tried manually modprobe-ing 'ds' and 'usbserial' but without success.

Hey v3gout,

What datacard do you have, option or novatel?

Thanks,

Pieter

It's a Novatel card. From the information I have been able to find on the net, it appears to be more a PCMCIA/Cardbus problem than a card problem. The system log contains messages saying 'can't map card memory'.

Hey v3gout,

Mind posting the output of /var/log/messages when you insert the card?

Later !

Would if I could! Nothing appears when I insert the card; the mapping errors come up when I run 'cardctl status' and 'cardctl config'. I've seen things about address range clashes with APCI - disabling that and reserving memory ranges didn't help.

Hey v3gout,

Odd one...it PCMCIA running?

Hi Tazz - unfortunately I don't have another PCMCIA card to test with. But the fact that the card works in my notebook, and the fact that cardctl can at least see it as a 5V 16-bit card makes me think it's not an electrical problem but a software one.
Was your question 'is the pcmcia module loaded'? Yes - but to be able to get anything out of cardctl I had to manually load the 'ds' and 'usbserial' modules. I suspect that the necessary interrupt is not being generated when the crd is plugged in.

Hey v3gout,

Yeah sorry, was in a bit of a rush when I wrote it. you are running FC3 if I remember correctly, so try this:

/etc/init.d/pcmcia status

Should return running or so. You shouldn't need to load the drivers yourself, since the Novatel is a pretty good device in reporting its "type". Did you load serial_cs ?

Later

For some stupid reason FC3 decided last night not too see my data card anymore. Will be spending some time trying to fix it tonight but looking at maybe trying the new FC4 beta too see if the Option card is better supported.

Welcome to the world of cross os systems. And I though cross browser was a pain.
