Hi Forumites,
I've been using Linux (only Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), ever since it came out, 6 - 8 months and am very impressed with the stability, security & ease at which it runs on my 10 year old Laptop....Intel 1.8MHz, 2GB Ram & 60GB Hdd...:D
I'm in the process of building a similar (or better) Desktop for my G/Daughter, age 11 - because I'm also impressed at the number of educational packages (free) one sees, when you view the Ubuntu Software Center. I personally use Stellarium - free constellation S/W, trying to update my meagere knowledge of the Universe.
However, I'm slightly confused because upon Googling "Linux educational S/W" I see a lot of mention is made of Kubuntu as the defacto educational O/S...don't know if I phrased that corrrectly?
So, my question is should I load Ubuntu or Kubuntu for the main O/S & will I have same access to Ubuntu Software Center for their free packages....Caramba! I just found out now, there's Edbuntu also available...
OK! so which is best to use? Thanks!

All of them are basically Ubuntu, and will be compatible with all packages available for Ubuntu. The only difference will be the window manager (the look), and the pre-installed packages.

If you want educational packages pre-installed, Edubuntu will work nicely, but nothing prevents you from installing those same apps with almost no effort on Ubuntu or even Kubuntu.

Thank you Gents,
I must say, for a newcomer (to Linux) this can be a bit bewildering...& info is scattered far, wide & deep, with tons of reading....to do!
I will attempt a triple boot to see if I can put Win 7, Edbuntu & Qimo (I read & it looks promising..)
BTW B100...I used to be fairly good at golf, in 1st 6 months, dropped from 24 to 13 handicap...until a shoulder injury laid me of...I'd love to get back in it.
