Hi Everyone

First off, I apologise if this is has been posted before.
When searching, some people mention that you can use the ethernet modem plugged into a spare ethernet card for linux. They claim that this is picked up as a ppp device. How is this so?
Has anyone used this configuration on the Fedora distribution?
Also, I can't seem to find the modem anywhere on Sentech's site. Does anyone know the price offhand?

Thanks for your patience

Hi,

You use the same USB modem, but you need to buy an ethernet cable. I think they go for about R150 these days. When connected through the ethernet cable, it works like any other PPPOE device. You'll need PPPOE software to discover the modem. Once connected it will create a PPP device.

I have used the modem on RedHat with roaringpenguin RP-PPPoE. I can not think of any reason why it should not work on Fedora.

I also know of other people using Fedora (with the built-in kernel PPPoE support) on external modems with great success.

It's a proprietry connector. The ethernet cable's got a little inline box which looks like it might be doing something to convert the, what I assume is a, custom USB connector to Ethernet.

Cable

Is it not just one of those doodahs to decrease cable attentuation? or something like that. I spoke to a No Wire guy the other day and he said he can run a cable up to 30 metres if need be. So that gives me the impression, it does not have to be the "propietory" cable.

How does a cable convert USB to ethernet is what I want to know. Doesn't seem right. Does the modem have an external power source then?

Yes, it does. It's got a builtin Lithium battery and an external transformer.
I don't think it's "converting" usb to ethernet, but rather the modem switches between usb and ethernet mode, depending on what cable is connected. I sure as hell ain't gonna take my ethernet cable appart just to see what that little box does....

Mayh3m, if you can't find an ethernet cable, I've still got one for the MyCareLess modem that I no longer use, I could sell it to you for R75 - so long as your in the Joburg area and are willing to collect - I live in Blairgowrie, Randburg.

Linux picks up the device as a PPPoE connection - it works wonderfully with linux firewalls like Smoothwall or IPcop.

Not too difficult to setup, so long as your willing to read up a bit.

bb_matt, if Mayh3m doesn't want that cable, I'll take it off your hands! Obviously he has dibs though.

I live literally down the road from you in Ferndale.

That is much appreciated. I will take it off your hands if you don't mind.
I am willing to collect.
How would you like to arrange this?
Brendon

Agh, just mail me on my gmail account - [email protected] - I'll reply and we can meet somewhere in randburg - no biggie.
I'm free tommorrow most the day and on Thursday till 12noon, after which, for obvious reasons, I'll be a bit busy.

The cable is working hundreds, but for R75, I'm not going to run around to drop it off or anything.
You want a cable, I've got one that I have no use for, so I'm willing to help out a fellow netizen and save them R75 - in fact, I don't even know how available the the ethernet cables are anymore. I know it took me a while to get hold of the one I've got.

You can either meet me at my place and SMS when your at the gate and I'll pop out with the cable, or we can meet somewhere in the Randburg area.
