Linux features on more supercomputers than IBM

But will it run Crysis?

Thats the last thing on your mind when you have 1000 users in your company and they all need Microsoft CALs (client access licence).

Honestly dont know how a business can make a profit if they are using a Microsoft solution.

Try SQL server CALs if you have 1 000 000 users connecting to your server.

@kingrob - amen to that

Want to kick our Server2003 and Exchange2003 out - having too many issues with it lately as well as the ever-present threat of viruses and malware in circulation.

1000000 users connecting to my server... shouldn't cost much more than about 10 or 15 processor licenses... so maybe just shy of R500k per annum.

Do these machines actually do anything other than run benchmarks for this Top 500 list? No sarcasm, I'm curious.

I don't know many companies that make a profit WITHOUT a Microsoft solution. Unless they run a Novell or IBM solutions.

Opensource is cool, but let's be realistic.

It's kinda like saying:
I don't know how a business makes a profit using:
Eskom
Telkom
Insurance
SARS
Salaries

These are all costs of doing business. If you use someones product you have to pay for it, unless you can find something free.

Don't blame Microsoft for running a business

Ever heard of Zimbra, MySQL, Ubuntu?

You've got some reading to do.

Definitely. Some are used to manage nuclear weapon stockpiles. Because the material that is used to make nuclear weapons decays over time, these machines are used to run simulations of this to try determine whether the weapons are safe and usable.

Also, I remember reading about roadrunner being used to simulate a part of a mouse brain. They are mostly used for simulation purposes (also used in weather forecasting).

How many businesses run exclusively on those products? and I don't mean little IT startups that you run out of your dads garage. The fact is that the VAST majority of commercial entities use commercial solutions.

Go recompile your OS and learn to comprehend

Ever heard of Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, NASA, Wikipedia, eBay, London Stock Exchange, NYSE, The White House (website)...... and many others?

MS vs. Linux / OSS.

I would say run whatever makes your business more productive. Your OS should be a tool like screwdriver, not the begin and end all of your business.

If your TCO with Linux/OSS is lower than MS, then go for Linux/OSS, if not well then go for MS or whatever.

Your IT equipment should actually be invisible, the only thing that matters is does it make me more money.
