Linux help needed...

Im installing it right on VirtualBox and already it cant detect my 2nd HDD what should i do?

I did check the mixer but see didn't anything about surround sound. I'll check it out tonight at home. Thanks for the tip:).

Before I forget, you also need to untick the mute on the surround sound.

Im looking forward to the day when you actually know what you are talking about :D I am very hopeful :D
Ok, so they hadn't fixed the sound yet. I stand corrected. Always something with Linux, always something ... tsk..tsk..

Have you upped the volume of your surround sound? I had a similar problem, and I went through the mixer till I found the surround sound settings, once I pushed that up I was able to hear stuff.

When going through the ubuntu forums I actually found it was a common problem.

You argue whether you are right or wrong. If someone said the sky was blue you would disagree with them. I guess linux really is not for you... Im not surprised.

[OK, enough of the personal attacks, Wizford.]

Look, I'd love Linux to work for me because UNIX is really my game, but it doesn't. It never has and doesn't look likely to do so for the forseeable future.

Take Ubuntu for example. The first time I tried it, Grub didn't work and messed up my system and foreced a complete overwrite. On the next release they tried something fancy. It was trying to go to a live distro routine as default when my PC was not up to running live distros. When I managed to get around this it then wouldn't see my graphics (bog standard) much less the sound. When a new release came out I tried again and then found other things were not compatible like bluetooth, modems, etc etc.. and so it went on... and on... and on....

I even tried PC_BSD which made the over-complex Ubuntu install look silly. BSD was a good system but they had problems with the ACPI (?) system which controls cooling -- not something to be messed with --.

Now I check back and see Ubuntu still haven't improved much as far as I can see. It seems like a one man and his dog operation with marketing hype! If a small specialised group like PC_BSD can trump them on the install then that doesn't say much for Unbuntu and LINUX in general, does it?

By all means try the thing, but expect headaches. It's a tinkerers dream

Its not in the default menu, its like somewhere hidden away in the advanced properties (in the mixer somewhere). You will need to fiddle, but I am willing to bet thats the same problem. Cause if you have the mixer, it generally means your sound card has being installed okay, but for some reason, you have to up that surround sound to get it out. I worked this one out last night... I am also not at home so I dont have the direct link where I got that information from.

Double click the speaker icon in the top toolbar menu, select edit, select preferences, tick all the boxes and unmute and raise the volume of all of them. The exact culprit should be "surround", I have to do this every time I fresh install.
I also recommend typing about:config in the Firefox address toolbar, scrolling down to "network disable ipv6" and changing it to true. This will speed up any slow resolution times.

Before I forget, you also need to untick the mute on the surround sound.

Try running alsamixer from the command line.

I enabled all the options in the mixer (no surround in there) - even tried the command line version. Then I had this problem.

It really sounds like you are having trouble with the muted surround sound option. You need to find it.. I was drunk when I did mine, so I cant remember :(

or

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-459938.html

Grizzmo seems to give the best instructions there. The option is there... you just need to find it.

But something in here will help you:

http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=e...orums.org+ubuntu+how+to+unmute+surround+sound

If all else fails, login to ubuntuforums and ask them how to unmute your surround sound with step by step instructions. Someone will help you out.

I cant seem to install it, it just stops at 82% and i tried installing with a burned CD and an image but still..

I can concur with trying to run games in a virtual windows session - it won't work.

Best to do is to either

a) Get a larger HDD in your laptop and dual-boot between windows/linux
b) Boot either windows or linux off from an USB HDD/flash drive

I will be investigating option a.

Ok i installed it but how do i run it in full screen mode? I tried it from the VB menu but the main screen is still small.

When writing system disks, keep the speed of writing as slow as possible. I often get this problem except when I write at x8 speed, or the iso is corrupt.

Can anyone give me tutorials on how to install compiz fusion(dont forget im a noob)

These are step by step. Did you install ubuntu or kubuntu? There are different steps for the two. Dont forget, compiz fusion is more extreme than the normal compiz you get bundled with ubuntu these days, but its lots of fun!

That should be installed by default, just go to your 'system' -> 'preference' -> 'appearance' --> visual effects--> select the advanced option.

But compiz-fusion is much better so give that a try out to get things like the cube and the more advanced effects.

When you have enabled the advanced features push ctrl+alt+ left or right arrow for desktop switcher.

Hold down alt when your mouse is in the corner of a window and click and drag it to look underneath it.

Shake a window, it should wobble.

Click and drag the top of the window frame (down) at the top to look behind it.
