Hey,

I have downloaded the currect wvdial.conf. It looks like it has not been updated ;)

I tried editing the file and using /dev/noz0 but obviously I am no hero when it comes to modems since I can't get it to work :o I keep getting this:

Code:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot open /dev/noz0: Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Cannot open /dev/noz0: Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Cannot open /dev/noz0: Cannot get information for serial port.

Blind...update the backup instead of the live one....hhhmmmm

Run setserial on /dev/noz* and lets see what it says.

Thanks, okay tried your setserial command, also played around with it but no luck

Code:
PROM:/home/Alchamy # setserial -a /dev/noz* low_latency spd_warp
Cannot get serial info: Invalid argument
Also tried

Code:
PROM:/home/Alchamy # setserial -a /dev/noz0 low_latency spd_warp
Cannot get serial info: Invalid argument
I did however get it working by adding it as a modem in YAST. So I am all sorted. Thanks for all your help.

Hi,

I've finally got myself a HSDPA card... :D

I'm having a different problem, Linux seems not to notice the card at all
On inserting the card the lights begin to flick and all, but /var/log/messages reports no activity at all? Even though the pcmcia card services have been initialized...

Anyone else had this sort of problem?
Any ideas what to try?

Thanks

EDIT: I'm using Fedora Core 4 by the way..

Hey redarrow,

Did you notice I updated the main FAQ with the Linux and HSDPA stuff ?

Try those and keep me posted :)

Hi Tazz_Tux,

I did notice the updates ;)

It's a funny thing, I re-did the nozomi driver install, and on doing insmod nozomi.ko it kind of came alive and seemed to recognize the card.

When running "wvdial hsdpa" now it's getting as far as:
Code:
...
---> pid of pppd: 3388
---> Using interface ppp0
pppd: ed by Tazz_tux
pppd: ed by Tazz_tux
pppd: ed by Tazz_tux
pppd: ed by Tazz_tux

and then it dies (error code 10)

By the way, I'm only hoping to actually get EDGE as I don't have a HSDPA signal around here (as far as I know)...

Any ideas?

Thanks for all the work! :D

LOL - how is that for getting my name out there :)

try running the following command:

wvdial hsdpa 2gonly

Laterz !

I was kind of wondering what it was about ;)

I tried "wvdial hsdpa 2gonly".. no luck same problem...
On inspiration I shoved a MTN simcard into the thing and it connects right away (gprs only though)
Now I'm wondering if it's my simcard?

Some notes:

I forgot to mention, before I posted here I did some "googling" and one or another link suggested I pass the kernel on boot: "pci=assign-busses"
After disabling that option and rebooting, the card goes completely undetected again,
simply adding it again and rebooting, and the card is detected again...
Just thought I'd mention that in case anyone has a similar problem.

I still have not managed to connect using vodacom, whilst mtn is working each time (in fact I'm connected right now via mtn using my data card)

By the way, not sure if someone's mentioned it before, but the Gnome Panel applet "Modem Lights" works great for monitoring usage, just set the lock file in the preferences dialog.. I set mine to "/var/lock/LCK..noz0" not sure what the lock file will be for other data cards...
I don't think the speed indicator will be much use on 3g or HSDPA though as it can only display 4 digits.. (in bytes) :D

Help !!!!!

I have done everything as described in the forums so I think it comes down to just plain old user stupidity

When I type in the wvdail command everything seems to work this is the screen output

I can ping the dns servers however when I try and surf the web I keep geting host can not be resolved

I have also clean out the default route gw as described in various replies in the forum and still no luck

Any suggestions ?

Hey cre8or,

What distro you running ?

Under /etc/ppp/options add the following line:

usepeerdns

You are a genius!!
Up and running.

It is slow resolving names but I can live with that.
Once resolved it flies.

Thanks

Just got it to work...

I had forgotten about the AT+CGDCONT stuff :o
Just running wvdial with the "internet" option in the conf file made it work!

Now if only Vodacom would bring HSDPA into my zone
- Oh and PPDB would also be nice :D

Has anybody managed to get the Novatel Merlin U740 card to work in Linux? I got one of those yesterday, but could not find any useful info just yet ...

thanks!

Hey nextstep,

From what I can see, it should work the same as the u630. Run

tail -f /var/log/messages

while plugging in the card and PM me the result. If this is one of the Vodacom cards, I will have to phone a friend :) to see if I can land my hands on one for a few mins.

Laterz !

I'm Soory to say I have the same problem with a "nozomi" Vodacom/Vodafone card... I've downloaded the driver and it installs, but when i run
#modprobe nozomi

Where am i going wrong...

FATAL: Module nozomi not found

I've been trying 4 2 days to get this card up in my debian with kernel 2.6 box.... and the best i get is "FATAL: Module nozomi not found" after I install the driver...

In the directory that you compiled the driver - type insmod nozomi.ko :)
