Linux - HOWTO (With Stats)

The catch is we don't know what/how ubuntu is dialing up. See if you have "wvdial" and "wvdialconf" on the livecd. We can try and play with those and have a bit more success.

Ok - that is already a winner. Download the wvdial.conf file from the start of this thread. Place the file in /etc (if you can - otherwise we will make a diff plan). We can then edit one of the sections in there and change it to suite your phone. I think there is already an E1000 section that will suite our needs.

Once that is done a simple command like

wvdial phone internet 3gonly
will get you connected. Replacing "phone" with what ever you call the section :)

I'm really struggling with internet connection sharing. as previously mentioned, I've tried your howto, and further instructions but nothing seems to work. the machine on the network that requires the shared connection is a XP machine. I could have sworn that i saved a log of the messages linux gives when i try to set it up, but it doesn't seem to be on my flash drive this morning... Will post log tomorrow. In the mean time, i can tell you that it says libxxx_masq is unknown or undefined... (I could have posted a log previously come to think). Any further suggestions, or anything I am supposed to have set up before this will work?

See if iptables is installed on your system :)

PPP connect errors with GPRS card

Good day everybody.

This is my first post. Go easy please.

I have a problem trying to setup a GPRS connection in Linux.
Can someone please assist me with my troubleshooting.

My machine : Mandriva Linux 2006
PCMCIA Vodafone Mobile Connect card (Option) GPRS only
Kernel :
Linux localhost 2.6.12-12mdksmp #1 SMP Fri Sep 9 17:43:23 CEST 2005
i686 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 144 unknown GNU/Linux

Scripts : I am using pppd and chat to dial with my own scripts.

I am not sure of whether Vodacom requires pap or chap for authentication.

Hi

It didn't allow me to paste the wvdial.conf file in the etc folder. But it does allow me to paste on the desktop. I guess we have to go to the other plan you mentioned:)
 
Hey topper,

This might sound very stupid, but it would appear that your sim ins't data active. Does the sim work under windows ?

About the auth. you can uses pap and just send it anything (I normally send "username" and "password" :) )

You could place it somewhere else and just use the following command then...

eeekkk - it would appear that they havn't released new firmware for the card...I will see if I can find a way to tell what firmware you have (other than using the dash ;) )

AT+CGMR will display the current firmware version.
The MTN branded cards seem to have all come with version 11.16.08.01.00.
Anyone seen any other versions in the wild?

PPP errors with GPRS in Linux

I just wanted to say thanks to Tazz for the advice.

The problem however, was with my username and password.

I assumed that since in Windows, it connects even when you enter nothing for the username
and password, you can try the same in linux. Unfortunately my logic was wrong.

I just entered some bogus values and I was able to connect.

A quick question, After I connect I get these errors frequently. Anybody knows what it means.

And lastly, after you establish a ppp connection, do you just let it run in the terminal and when you are
done, close the session with ctrl-c ?
