Hi guys

hoping someone have maybe some advise here.

I am finally getting tired of the resource hog windows 10 is (after the latest update performance just went from bad to worse - looking at almost 8 minutes just to boot.)

since i use my work laptop most of the time, this is the first machine i would like to convert. Problem is, that we work on a client /server setup in the office (eg all documents / spreadsheets is saved on a central windows share).

I attempted this migration about a year ago using ubuntu + openoffice, but had issues with some excel documents where it corrupts after opening it on the linux machine ( eg windows machine saves document, linux is able to open/edit and save it, but after that the windows machine cant read it anymore)

it will be a major PITA for me to run windows in a VM to test all documents first, but i really cant risk corrupting company files(some of these is spreasheets that is backup data for company proposals)

has anyone else recently migrated in a similar scenario and maybe have some advice for me?

TIA

Since this is work related, I wouldn't advise it. Something goes wrong, you're going to get blamed.

Buy an SSD.

Much better idea than switching OS which won't change the performance all that much.

Office 365, I just use the cloud based services.

I don't think Win10 is to blame here, but more likely your network setup and/or network file sharing. Other than that have you attempted a fresh Win10 install ?

This is what i would do, given the fact that you can't risk messing up shared files in an office environment. I'll make a huge difference.

If your laptop is taking 8 minutes to boot, either you or the laptop is faulty and not win 10. My win 10 laptop boots in under 20 seconds.

maybe have some advice for me?

Ask someone with some IT skills (that include using Win10) to help you?

Changing OS is not the simplest solution to this problem and should not be attempted first.

As others have said, something is wrong. My 2013 laptop takes nowhere near 8 minutes to boot. Check laptop, change to SSD.

Agreed. My laptop was also taking forever to start up on Windows 10 with the disk sitting at 100%. I got a SSD and life is much better now.
I have duel boot setup so mostly boot into Linux nowadays, but sometimes Windows too.

Very possible: I've known network boots that had a 20 minute start-up due to active directory, waiting for time-outs etc.

Do all machines on the network experience a similar delay ?

Agreed it's not Windows that's to blame for the slow boot. I have an antique Asus W5F from the previous decade. 1.5GB RAM with tiny HDD. From a cold start I can open a browser in under 40 seconds.

openoffice is dead. You can try LibreOffice, it is cross platform so no issue testing it on Windows before you migrate to Linux.

personally I would migrate that server to Linux.

Ahh the joys of a m.2 nvme drive I boot in a second.

Amd as for him, if his on the network domain and takes 8 minutes to boot them its his profile that's quite big and most likely downloading from the sever which is running on a 10/100 network.

Seriously ? From completely shut down, cold start ?
Ignoring the bios since no drive can fix that, the moment the bios stop I'm in chrome.

I don't see loading screens.

Powe button - > Bios -> chrome

Run a HDD benchmark, it sounds like its dying.

I dont understand the advice in here, there is a software compatibility issue and people are giving advice on networking? Why am I so lost in these replies?

I have similar problem with my work laptop, after wiping few weeks back the problem seems to be when adding it to the domain sadly I have no control over that so I avoid shutting down...
