linux is dead?

Linux owns apple in smartphones. Well at least in the numbers.
ios/osx is also basically a unix OS. Just like linux/android.

Linux will get the Desktops when the app writers write for linux. Its the only thing slowing adoption at the moment.
Desktop PC's will disappear before linux gets a significant marketshare of them.

I think we have Microsoft to thank for that. They will fight it every way they can till the last dollar.
They just make the best desktop OS available, so far linux nerds haven't been able to come up with anything as user friendly or easy to use.

And while it is absolutely true that linux totally dominates the super leet haxx0r market of super computers and huge corporations and space satellites beaming into the next dimension, let's not pretend there is no SMB sector also. It is in this SMB market where linux/unix market share is tiny indeed.

linux admin i know is busy switching to windows because his boss told him the linux fad is over. apparently this dude know what he is talking about. linux will cease to exist by 2019

I'll bet it's a pointy-haired boss.

Yeah look Im a linux admin, I have tons of linux servers everywhere but I really dont like desktop linux. I still run windows and probably will continue to do so for a very long time.
Linux isnt going anywhere on the server front though if anything its getting stronger.

Well, if it wasn't for Linux, two of my clients would be sitting without any of their valuable company data right now.

The main cockup was the a completely failed drive that had bad sectors where the boot record normally goes, so Windows failed to boot at all. Load into live Ubuntu and Linux even failed to read the files. Load TestDisk, scan the entire drive and recover the files to an external - problem solved. My client got back all her Pastel data and her emails, along with about 98% of the other data on her drive.

Long live Linux! :D

EDIT: They now have backups. :p

I really truly want to start using Linux. I wish it was viable for me to do so.

If I could get rid of Windows on on our servers today I would, nothing but fscking issues while the Linux box just chugs along merrily. They "have to have" MS Exchange so I just smile and nod.

If you love Indie Games then Humble Indie Bundle ensures that all its titles are Linux compaitable

I'm actually seeing a lot of positive trends for Linux gaming:
1) The comeback of OpenGL.
2) The failure of Microsoft to leverage Windows8 as a gaming platform
3) Valve's push to migrate Steam to Linux
4) The improvement of driver capabilities

Why is it not viable? Nothing stops you from running it in Virtualbox. I did that at my previous job

Not Virtualbox. I want my home computer to be Linux. There's just too much legwork involved in making that happenat present though.

Linux dead...um never. Windows dying (in terms of consumer) most definitely. Gee, Windows 8 sure looks like Ubuntu's Unity...

I myself am moving closer and closer to using Linux as a desktop OS. The only thing holding me back atm is Visual Studio.

What language are you coding in? If you develop in C#, MonoDevelop is pretty good. MonoDevelop is a fork of SharpDevelop, so you probably want to give that a look.

I can;t see how you wanna develop for Windows Phone on a non Windows OS. Same goes for Microsoft based games.

If you want to develop for another OS than the one you running, you should be using cross-platform technologies.

I want to, it's just not possible. I enjoy working with .NET technologies, I'm not interested in Java or another cross platform language.

Clearly he does not know what he is talking about. Nothing lasts forever, but Linux will not die any time soon. Should actually send this to Linus, but I'm scared he would facepalm himself on his desk and die of blunt force trauma.

Just curious, why does he say it will be 2019?
