Asus has formally rolled out its Eee PC line of sub-notebook computers, a week after UK supplier RM - formerly Research Machines - spilled the beans on two of the models. The complete line-up comprises four computers.

And they come preinstalled with Linux, although these can also run XP.

Looks really sweet... the laptop, not the girl :p

Fitted with solid-state hard drives instead of the traditional whirring ones makes good sense, and the lowest model have 2.8hrs battery life, which isn't too bad.

Anybody willing to sponsor one for testing and evaluation purposes? :)

2gb/4gb/8gb of storage space depending on model.

it does have a use, make no doubt about it. but same like the OLPC, add a few more $$$ and you can buy a very reasonably specced fully featured "normal" laptop s/h pretty much anywhere.

may get one for my kid though, like the pretend "baby" toy laptop before he grows up enough to own a proper one.

I wouldnt mind buying one of these... whats that.. a R2000 laptop? luckily i use linux so space is not an issue. Anyone know of any suppliers for these in SA yet? Can we order them online?

The solid state would make booting and other tasks a breeze. If you do need space, just get a 160GB external. I can see the use of this type of notebook.

The solid state drives are also more robust. This could be a very useful notebook.

The first article mentions 900 Mhz Celeron. These laptops are really compact which is why they probably went for the solid state hard drives. But the external hard drive idea should certainly fly:)

I went to the Asus evening on Wed ... I saw the Eee PC ... it looks great, weighs nothing, works really well, is relatively fast for what it needs to do ... all round, it is great for people who just need a pc for the average stuff like office, internet and stuff like that. It also has a built in webcam which is really cool ... you can install windows if you want ... but why turn a good thing bad ... and for those who would complain about small hard drive space, buy a external drive :P
I'll be selling these at about between R2999 - R4100 ... but I think they are backorders ... so if u want want for the wife or the kids or even urself :P, let me know ... the pricing I have isn't confirmed, but its the last figures I heard. Sorry at Bwana for this partial Ad ;) ... I started off explaining, then wanted to say what price range they are in ... and couldn't help myself :)

Do you have any confirmations on the speed?:)

They all have 900Mhz ... the cheapest model has 256MB Ram and 2GB SSD Hard Drive.
The next model up is exactly the same except with Carry Case :P
The top model has 512MB Ram and 4GB SSD HDD.

I must say though ... they were very smooth to operate, and had everything the average office user needs. Its great for when a kid says he needs a PC to do his homework ... cause thats exactly what its for, or for office workers, or housewives.

If you asked me its an advanced PDA that folds in half ... worth the money in my opinion.

People say put in an extra 1k and you get a laptop, but the thing is that laptop is about double the size, this thing is tiny. Perfect for portability.

I just wish they put bigger hard drives in ... but you can always buy an external pocket drive.
