Bumped into the Linux Lite distro today (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, XFCE), looks interesting so I've installed it alongside Win 8 on a Pentium dual core 1.6 / 2GB DDR2-800 and will play with it over the weekend.

Minimum HW specs & downloads:

It's a 760MB iso so you have to install from DVD or USB, I went the DVD route with no hassles.
 
Also just heard about it yesterday, busy downloading now - looks interesting.

Just out of interest, what advantages does this have over the "official" Xubuntu or Lubuntu 12.04?

This is what piqued my interest, haven't had a chance to play yet but todays weather in PE is lousy so I guess I'll be checking it out after 1pm:

Been testing 'live' session, v1.06, 64bit(723mb) for a few hours now on E7500/2gb ddr2 pc & 1000m/2gb ddr3 laptop:

All hardware correctly detected.
Low memory usage, 300-310mb after cold boot.
Software launches very quickly, better than standard X/L/Ubuntu live sessions.
Included software not latest versions but seem to be chosen to suite lower hardware resources.
Wallpapers, icons, etc. look good.

A smooth & solid distro...will install it later & test some more, could be my new default OS for older hardware.

Could be what I'm looking for. Will download tomorrow or maybe Monday.

Tried a few for comparison, you are correct:

Lubuntu 12.10 - 139MB
Xubuntu 12.10 - 190MB
Mint 15 XFCE - 260MB
LinuxLiteOS - 280MB

In use however, Linux Lite feels quicker than the others, especially when launching applications - L/Xubuntu 'feel' the slowest...

On the whole...I support any enthusiasm about any *nix flavour whatsoever.

I do sense a bit of confusion though. e.g.

Ubuntu is gnome based, while xubuntu is xfce based. Why use Ubuntu when a xfce optimized version of *ubuntu is available?

Not entirely convinced thats a relevant criteria in a world of 8gb+ PCs....

Personally I favour a debian minimal build + whatever is needed but hey...as I said I'm cool with whatever works for people on the *nix front.

btw OP - I can't quite judge your skill level so don't take this wrong, but on the whole virtualbox is a better answer than dual booting if you just want to try stuff.

No offence taken :)

I'm testing for the real world so virtual box is not ideal, only mentioned the Win 8 dual boot because of the UEFI dual boot Linux debate. Still haven't had time to come to grips with Linux Lite so all MyBB members impressions are welcome.

Believe it or not we have some Ubuntu 7.10 and Win XP systems in the field that are long overdue for replacement and I'm looking for a LTS candidate that won't scare Windows users too much for HW/SW budgeting:)
