It seems like the Mint team is rethinking their Gnome 3 stance (after loosing quite a few users no doubt) and they seem to be developing around Cinnamon, a Gnome 2 fork.

I'm not going to jump up and down just yet, last year they announced that they were giving up on their Ubuntu roots, and yet, here we are. I'll wait for an Alpha release to test it out and see if they are keeping true to their word.

Having tried Cinnamon for a few days on F16 I am really impressed. The productivity is good, allowing for fast access to data during meetings etc.

Apparently the next LTS version of Ubuntu will allow for a Gnome 3 desktop, which will mean that Cinnamon should be easy to install on that distro as well.

I cannot really find any info on Cinnamon, so I assumed it was Gnome 2 fork since it looks more like Gnome 2 than Gnome 3, sorry.

I have Cinnamon and Gnome Shell installed on ubuntu 11.10 without any difficulty. However, after having used Unity, I find Cinnamon very counter-intuitive, that after having used Gnome2 for many years.

Besides which I love the lenses in Unity, like for example, the Youtube lens, the Google Docs lens and the Notes lens, which makes searching for any of my docs very easy no matter where they are stored. Then of course, there's the YouPorn lens

Aaah crap, and here I joined Mint because of there implementation(MGSE).

They better keep it around.

I will not bet anything on Mint at this stage, they have made some statements in the past that never came to fruition, so lets just wait and see what actually happens in the end.
