Linux Mint 18 released

Great, I love Linux and have used it, but Wine is not to good and I need windows for work, AutoCAD etc. I know I can do duel boot, but I prefer not to

It's the completionist in me - can't abide the thought that there is stuff not absolutely correctly named at the file level :p

This guy's got OCD...there are creams for that, you know :)

The switch from .avi to .mkv must have been fun for you :p

Testing on a USB stick (downloaded the iso and copied onto the stick using dd...). Smooth as silk. Now I need to find an old harddisk and install it on that.

Not for business use, most companies are very insistent on what software their employee's use

Have just seen that Mint 18.1 is going to get the Snap installer.

Does anyone know if this is going to work the same way that it currently does in Ubuntu - specifically will mean having to creating an account with Canonical and then logging in to use the package manager?

Of all the "out the box experiences" I've had with different flavors of Linux only Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint which is based on Ubuntu has been the most painless for me to install and work without any compatibility issues. I especially like the "lite" version of Fedora for older machines, for anyone running an old laptop take a look at : https://spins.fedoraproject.org/en/lxde/

I am subscribing I learn alot about Linux when I don't ask questions. Continue.

Linux Mint 18: The best desktop -- period

You could keep worrying about being forced to upgrade to Windows 10, or you could try the best of all Linux desktops: Mint 18.

Many of you, for example, are struggling with the question of whether to "upgrade" to Windows 10. Many of you feel -- with some reason -- you're being forced to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Others are now realizing that Microsoft seems to be changing Windows from a purchase model to a subscription model. If you really want to "own" your operating system, you're going to need to move from Apple's macOS, Google Android/Chrome OS, or Windows 10 to Linux. All the other "desktop" operating systems are moving to subscription and cloud models.

That said, what's great about this latest version of Mint is that it's a solid, up-to-date Linux desktop where you, and nobody but you, gets to decide what you run.

Dude's not a gamer...that's the biggest obstacle I have at the moment moving all my machines onto Linux. If Valve can't get a decent gaming-oriented fork going, what hope do the other distros have?

It's getting better luckely. The game situation improved a lot lately just look at the graph climbing on https://steamdb.info/linux/. With Vulkan on the horizon and even Android Nougat supporting it we're MUCH better off then a few years ago. AMD also got their stuff together and they now only have one Linux driver with the closed source Pro version comming out later this year. It's in beta now. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd-win10-amdgpupro&num=1

Overall, the AMDGPU PRO driver stack was certainly competitive with the Radeon Software driver on Windows 10.

Steam on Ubuntu works fine. SteamOS is pointless in my opinion since it does nothing for me that the regular Steam client for Ubuntu can't do.

The biggest issue is the fact that not enough big name games are finding their way to the Linux platform. I also don't that changing since developers don't see Linux as a viable gaming platform since most PC gamers are on Windows and PC gamers won't move to Linux since there's not enough games for it.
