Linux on PS3

yellow dog linux? what happened to the penguin????

so is the yellow dog the thing in the machine that makes it work?

I think this is good news for PS3 fans in general but I have my worries about it.

Sony have never been known as the Open Source company, everything they invent they refuse to share and often end up in long legal and commercial battles over it. VHS/BETA, BluRay/HD.... Why the sudden change.

I don't think it's going to be the experience people where hoping for.....

I'm also a bit worried, wondering how they gonna keep things in check, but you never know, there have also been rumours of a PSP update that allows homebrew....

Like sony said about M$, "They are not a technology company", well Sony is not a software company and have no idea how to keep their hardware safe while giving someone access to it at the same time. I just don't see it happening or if it does the virusses are going to kill the PS3.... If you can write apps for it you can write a virus, trojan, worm or whatever... Next you will be buying antivirus for your console... But I guess King Ken did say it was a computer...

LOL true, but then again we all laughed at the thought of and anti-virus on a cell phone (some of us still laugh at that actually, I do ;) )

My next cellphone is going to do nothing but make phone calls... I hate this PDA rubbish, beeps at me all the time, I can't get away from work, email, sms... bah humbug.,

Yellow Dog has always been a "PowerPC" version of Linux, the one they used to run on Apple PC's, so it make sense to use it on the PowerPC based Cell.

I thought gaming consoles were made for simplicity. So that people could experience gaming without having to worry about how to use a pc. I guess the people who can afford a PS3 probably have powerful pc's as well :/
