Linux Photography

I hope the Linux version of Darktable is better than the OsX version I just tried.

I switched to Darktable a while ago after I got tired of paying for Adobe upgrades simply to get it to work with the latest camera.

There is a lot of learning involved, but once you are used to it then you can customize the interface to include only the elements that you want. There are some differences between the OSX and Linux versions, particularly in the RAW processing engines.

Did you have a specific problem, or was this more a matter of usability (which is understandable).

Now that Apple has mothballed Aperture I'm just trying to plan for the inevitable.

Unfortunately, aside from everything else, it doesnt seem to handle IPTC and metadata the way I need it to.

I don't access IPTC on Darktable and would not be able to offer any suggestions there.

A speculative alternative to Aperture may be Hasselblad Phocus (free download). I have used it to edit jpeg files on Windows, and they claim that it offers full RAW support on an Apple through the built-in RAW libraries in OS X. Since this software is meant for professionals maybe it handles IPTC better?

Thanks. I'll give it a look.
