Hey Guys

I need some help

What is a good proxy server to implement in linux ?

I also want detailed reporting. If you could send some links to also implement this it will be great.

Thanks ;)

Squid.

Google a distro with it pre-installed and running or just follow any howto on Ubuntu or Debian its not difficult to get it to work.

I use IPCop/Copfilter on an old PIII 733Mhz 256MB RAM, 2GB HDD.

IPCop is a free & very mature firewall/router/proxy server, built as a very specialised Linux system. It has a range of built in services & a range of other add-ons.

I use the Copfilter add-on, as it allows me to run Privoxy & ClamAV, without slowing down my internet speeds (not that I understand how it manages to do that?).

IPCop can do far more than I use it for on my small home network. I have spoken to people that have one IPCop box handling 300 computers. Our data throughput is not even enough to register on the inbuilt proxy server graphs.

It is also possible to install add-ons to IPCop, & one of those available is a much more capable proxy than that which is built into IPCop. (Sorry I can't remember its name of the top of my head.)

IPCop is easy to install & setup, it is tiny, about 20MB from memory & totally specialised, for its purpose, which makes it more secure & reliable.

You may find having a look at their site well worth your time.

All the best with your project. :)

Wow, a whole hour and SmoothWall *didn't* get a mention? ..glad to see IPCop getting press first for a change tho'. So, Copfiler work much the same as squid/sarg?

Here is a link to the IPCop site:

Here is a link to the Copfilter site (which is currently broken as of yesterday unfortunately):

If you have a look at the IPCop page & go to the Add-ons link, you will see quite a list of additions.

The Proxy add-on that I couldn't remember in my last post is Advanced Proxy:

I'm not a lot of help with the details of IPCop/Copfilter. I set it up about a year ago, in the process I learned a lot about it & associated stuff, after which I haven't really had to touch it. So I've forgotten most of what I knew. I just know it works great, & I'm very happy that I went to the trouble of installing it.

By the way, I recently obtained a gizmo that allows me to measure the power usage of anything that plugs into a power-point. I could put in what I have to pay per kWh ($0.19.62 cents Au) & it calculates the costs per hour, quarter & year.

The old PIII 733 that I use as the headless IPCop box, costs $55- Oz / year to run. Which isn't to bad I think.

As far as Copfilter working like Squid/Sarg is concerned? I don't think so. Copfilter provided an additional 10 services for the IPCop user. Of those 10, I only use 4, being: the Monitoring Utility; HAVP; Privoxy; ClamAV. I don't need ClamAV, (only Linux & OS X here) but because it has no effect on the speed of our internet access, I say why not.

The links I provided earlier in this post really should answer any questions about IPCop & the Add-ons.
