Hi

I installed my ADSL service in feb this year and have battled a lot with the service, I have had Telskum out here about 25 times and it now looks like they have sorted out my problems. To cut a long story short I was always being chucked around between Telskum and my service provider with them always telling me that the other party was at fault, so I wrote a couple of linux shell scripts to check the status of my adsl router and line and then report on the status of both. If anyone is interested and has a Linux box and a Netgear DG814 router I would be happy to email you the scripts. It was the only solution for me to sort out my problems and if it were'nt for this script I think that my ADSL service would still be down.
The average failure rate on my line until they fixed it was 60%

Same problem, same every thing, would you please be so kind as to mail me the scripts.

Thankx

Just to let you guys know, my service is still not sorted out, it now takes anywhere fron 10 minutes to 2 hours for my router to sync with the telkom exchange. My link speed is now also slower than a dialup modem let alone my ISDN connection. There are also sites such as www.bluebean.co.za that I can not even connect to (gives me a DNS error) but am able to connect with dialup.
Maybe some of you guys should check if you can browse to www.bluebean.co.za with your adsl.

Cheers

Bluebean works for me - I'm using a Marconi modem and going through Telkom internet

I've for the past week or 2 also had frequent disconnections with my Netgear DG824M, but it SEEMS that they have now fixed it, firstly, I would suggest NOT using the line filter Duxbury/Netgear provides (I cannot guarantee that it's the problem, but I feel safer in knowing I'm at least using a Telkom approved filter), and they also redid the connections at the street cabinet and at the exchange (whether that entails a port change, I'm unsure). Needless to say, things are considerably better than they were before.

Things to becareful of
1. Surge Protectors that plugin to the power, sometimes get extra harmonics which knock out your ADSL connection. I suggest seperating your phone line surge protection and your regular power surge protection

2. The one phone cable supplied with the 824 does not work. For some reason if you use the cables they supply your modem will not synch

3. The actual modem is really great and I am using it with a high uptime. Once in a while it does seem to jam up i.e. the same problem I experienced prebviously with the marconi. However the router is still accessible which is really great. So i have simply written a script to check if the router has lost its IP address and if it has not regained a new IP in 5 minutes I reboot the modem automatically
